The Meta Quest Pro 2 is speculated to be the next model in the Quest Pro series, which was first launched in 2022 as a top-of-the-line product. After two years, we have compiled all available information on a possible successor.
The Meta Quest 3 headset has proven to be a successful product for Meta, as it has attracted users back to the VR ecosystem with its wireless capabilities and wide selection of high-quality apps and games, all offered at an affordable price.
Despite not garnering the same amount of interest from consumers or developers as the Quest 3, the Meta Quest Pro has still managed to maintain a significant presence in the high-end VR market. This presence has been further ignited by the release of the Apple Vision Pro, generating renewed interest in the top tier of VR technology.
As reported by Wayne Ma and Qianer Liu from The Information, Meta is once again attempting to create a premium, standalone headset with the Quest Pro 2.

About
The internal name for the Quest Pro 2 project at Meta is ‘La Jolla’ and it has been in development since November 2023. A leaked hardware roadmap (via UploadVR) reveals that La Jolla is the successor to the original, which was a much less ambitious contender for the Quest Pro 2.
The roadmap confirms that the Quest Pro 2 will maintain the rear battery design of the original Quest Pro. However, no other details have been provided at this time.
Meta Quest Pro 2 specs
The month of November in 2023 holds importance as it marks the meeting between Meta executives and representatives from Samsung and LG’s Display Divisions. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the provision of OLED and MicroLED microdisplays for upcoming VR and AR devices.
With their higher pixel densities, microdisplays have the ability to offer improved resolutions for headsets. Moreover, these displays are also smaller in size compared to conventional VR headset displays, making them a potential choice for creating more compact and lightweight designs.
There is no confirmation of Samsung or LG’s involvement in the La Jolla Quest Pro 2 project, however, according to Meta’s VP of VR Mark Rabkin, the goal is to improve resolution for work purposes and specifically focus on text. This indicates that a microdisplay would be suitable for the project.
Meta Quest Pro 2 Features
The recently revealed roadmap also confirmed that the Quest Pro 2 will incorporate Codec Avatars, which is part of Meta’s efforts to enhance remote communication by developing highly realistic avatars. These avatars can be operated in real-time through the use of VR headsets that are equipped with face-tracking sensors.
Since 2019, Meta has been involved with the Codec Avatars project. Recently, in January 2024, references to Codec Avatars were found in the publicly released Quest firmware, indicating that the project is still actively being worked on.
Meta Quest Pro 2: Release Date Speculation
It is probable that there will be a significant delay before any product launch is announced. It has been reported that LG has reduced its efforts on the Meta and LG headset project due to disagreements among the team.
As reported by UploadVR, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth has stated that the development of Codec Avatars is progressing, but the project is still several years away from being ready for release.
This indicates that the Quest Pro 2 is unlikely to be available for purchase until at least 2025.
Is Meta Quest Pro 2 a Real Product?
Despite no official announcements being made by Meta, there has been no confirmation about the headset.
Despite multiple credible leaks, it is apparent that the Quest Pro 2, or a similar device, is currently in development. In addition to the Pro 2, there are also rumors of a budget-friendly headset, the Quest 3S, being worked on by meta.
