Is Echo a mutant in the MCU? Explanation of its abilities

The new MCU miniseries is out, and many fans are wondering if the main character, Echo, is an X-Men-style mutant.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has just started its year 2024 with a short series broadcast on Disney+. And it is clearly one of the darkest stories offered to date, probably because it follows an anti-heroine, Echo.

The series shows Maya Lopez, former hearing-impaired mafia boss, as she escapes from Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin (or the Kingpin), who is also her adoptive uncle, while the two have a more or less fatal altercation.

But the protagonist is no longer alone in her story, the MCU having opened the door to other characters from other franchises, and we can wonder: is she among the mutants, like the X-Men? We explain everything to you.

Is Echo considered a mutant in the MCU?

No, Echo is not considered a mutant in the MCU.

In her story, in both Hawkeye and Echo, Maya is an “ordinary” person who uses her heightened senses to combat threats because she is hard of hearing, which does not disadvantage her.

A situation that is completely in line with its comic book counterpart, because Maya is one of the rare Native American characters who are neither mutants nor members of the X-Men.

However, that doesn’t mean Echo doesn’t have supernatural abilities, as fans can see in the first episode of the miniseries: Maya maintains a certain connection to her Choctaw roots, which allows her to establish a kind of contact with his ancestors.

In episode 1, we are told that the first Choctaw tribe lived underground until their first brave warrior came forward to drink from their pool of “forbidden” water and gained supernatural abilities.

This pool of water strangely resembles Lake Kahhori, into which Canadian actress Devery Jacobs dove, during her solo episode in season 2 of What If…?.

Although these two characters come from different tribes, the powers derived from these two water sources are almost identical, as they offer superhuman strength, extraordinary agility and the power to communicate with the ancestors.

Maya, aka Echo, may not be a traditional mutant in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but she has distinguished herself by being one of the only Native American heroines in that universe.

The Echo mini-series is available in its entirety for streaming on Disney+.
