Is Interstellar Returning to Cinemas? Understanding the IMAX Re-Release

After a decade, Christopher Nolan’s mind-bending space epic Interstellar is making a comeback in theaters, giving fans the chance to experience it as it was originally intended.

After directing The Dark Knight Rises, Christopher Nolan’s next project, Interstellar, fulfilled the desires of his loyal fan base to see him move away from the superhero genre. This decision proved to be successful, as Interstellar is widely regarded as one of Nolan’s finest works.

As the 10th anniversary approaches, speculations are circulating that the movie may make a comeback in theaters. This would continue the trend of Nolan’s other films, such as Oppenheimer and The Dark Knight, being re-released for additional screenings.

Now that Interstellar’s release is approaching, fans who last saw the film in IMAX in 2015 are eagerly anticipating the momentous occasion. But when can they expect to see Interstellar back in cinemas?

Interstellar IMAX re-release date

The planned re-release of Interstellar on September 27, 2024 may be delayed or canceled. However, it was previously expected to return to cinemas on that date.

The announcement of an Interstellar re-release was first made at a CinemaCon presentation in April 2024 and was later confirmed by Empire Magazine.

Empire has announced that the film will be shown in Nolan’s preferred 70 mm IMAX format. While pre-sale reminders were previously accessible on AMC’s website, it seems that those pages have now been removed.

It was reported in August 2024 that the original IMAX prints were destroyed by distributor Paramount Pictures after the film’s initial release, which could be connected to the fact that Nolan had requested for the prints to be replaced, but Paramount declined to do so.

Excluding those prints would restrict the run to unofficial screenings held by theaters that failed to return their initial 70 mm IMAX prints.

Despite facing tough competition from blockbuster films like Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies, Interstellar was still able to achieve great success at the box office in 2014. It ranked as the 10th highest-grossing film of the year, solidifying its popularity among audiences.

It should come as no surprise to longtime fans that Interstellar will be re-released in theaters, as director Nolan has long been a strong proponent of the theatrical experience. In the wake of the 2020 pandemic, Nolan was quick to emphasize the significance of movie theaters.

In a 2020 op-ed for The Washington Post, Nolan expressed his belief that movie theaters are essential to American social life, where workers not only serve up stories and treats to the crowds, but also create a joyful atmosphere for friends and family to enjoy an evening out. As a filmmaker, Nolan believes that his work would never be complete without the workers and the audiences they welcome.
