Buu’s origins in Dragon Ball explained
The series initially revealed that Kid Buu was brought to life by the malevolent sorcerer Bibidi, father of Babidi. However, Akira Toriyama clarified that Kid Buu had existed since ancient times. This volatile creature would frequently go on destructive sprees and periods of dormancy, resulting in the absorption of the malicious traits of humanity and ultimately transforming into the entity that Goku and Vegeta confront at the conclusion of the original manga.
Many years prior to the events of the series, various Kais encountered Majin Buu and two of them perished during their encounters. Buu absorbed the South Supreme Kai, resulting in a larger, more muscular form. The Grand Supreme Kai also fought against Buu and was ultimately absorbed, resulting in the recognizable, chubby child-like appearance that is well-known among fans.
The revised version of Buu was much more manageable and less troublesome compared to the original, as he no longer possessed the innate malevolence and destructive tendencies. This was due to the influence of the Grand Supreme Kai’s purity that he had acquired. Bibidi, recognizing his inability to control Buu, took advantage of this state and sealed him away. Additionally, Shin took care of the wicked sorcerer, and even though his offspring Babidi would eventually release the creature many years later.
Each Buu form seen in the series
The initial version of Buu introduced in the series is Fat Buu, the one unsealed by Babidi. As he befriends Mr. Satan and grapples with his destructive tendencies, he unleashes his inner malevolence. This results in a transformation into a new form, commonly referred to as Skinny Buu by fans. This new version defeats the fat Buu and consumes him, giving rise to the powerful Super Buu.
This iteration of the character possesses even greater strength and cunning, as he dupes Gohan into merging with both Gotenks and Piccolo. This grants him their combined power and Piccolo’s intelligence. In one scene, the Gotenks fusion fades and Buu is shown wearing Piccolo’s attire, showcasing his tendency to change appearance after each absorption.
Eventually, he absorbs Gohan, resulting in the form known to most fans as Buuhan. This iteration not only boasts the greatest power among all versions of Buu, but also stands as the mightiest foe in the original Dragon Ball manga. However, Vegeta and Goku eventually manage to rescue all of the individuals he had absorbed, allowing the original Kid Buu to finally display his true abilities to the fans.

Despite his convoluted origin, Kid Buu remains the ultimate antagonist in the original Dragon Ball manga. He is notorious for being one of the most destructive beings in the series, as he was the first to successfully annihilate Earth, a feat no other villain had accomplished before.
