Despite her initial appearance as a sweet and caring individual who only had the best intentions for Denji and her team at Public Safety, Makima from Chainsaw Man quickly became one of the most intriguing characters. As the series developed, her true nature was revealed to be vastly different from what was originally perceived.
Despite being exposed as the Control Devil and a member of the Four Horsemen, Makima remained a calculative and devious individual with her own selfish motives. Although her actions were despicable, it is important to view her as a product of her circumstances rather than inherently evil.
Is the character Makima from Chainsaw Man portrayed as evil?
Despite what many may argue, Makima was not truly evil. There is solid justification for this belief. Although she could be harsh and resorted to manipulating Denji in order to achieve her ultimate goal – having eternal companionship with Pochita or Chainsaw Man.
Despite the fact that these aspects may contribute to her being a terrible person, it would be unfair to label her as purely evil once all the facts about her are known. Her background and development as an individual, which we will explore in the following section, ultimately played a significant role in shaping her into the person she became.
Furthermore, her “goal,”in a sense, suggests that she possessed a small amount of compassion. Her ultimate desire was to be with Pochita, whom she greatly admired for his power to eliminate the idea of a Devil by consuming it. Although she sought to control him, she did not wish to harm or destroy him, but rather to remain by his side.
Makima’s Origins in Chainsaw Man
During a fierce battle in Hell, the Control Devil and her sisters joined forces with the Weapon Devils in an attempt to defeat Chainsaw Man. However, the Hero of Hell suddenly disappeared during their final confrontation. Despite extensive search efforts, Pochita, in reality, had sustained severe injuries and managed to flee to Earth.
Following the confrontation, the Horsemen also made their way to Earth, each going their separate ways. The Control Devil assumed the guise of a human named “Makima”and was recruited by Public Safety. Under their jurisdiction, she eventually rose to the position of Head of Japan’s Public Safety Special Division 4. However, this transformation also caused her to become unfeeling, merciless, and shrewd.
As she once declared, she was considered a “necessary evil”and a tool of the Japanese government, much like the Gun Devil, which was largely influenced by the American government.
Why Makima isn’t as evil as fans think
Despite her reputation, Makima is not as malevolent as she is portrayed. As previously stated, her upbringing under the care of Public Safety and the Japanese Government shaped her into the calculated, shrewd, and detached individual she is portrayed as in the story.
Nayuta serves as evidence that the Control Devil does not have to resemble Makima. It should be noted that Nayuta became the reincarnation of the Control Devil after Makima’s defeat and consumption by Denji in his human form. This is the reason why the Control Devil was able to reincarnate instead of being erased from existence.
In the future, Kishibe’s choice to have Denji raise Nayuta instead of Public Safety is essentially what could have happened to Makima if Public Safety had not intervened. Despite Nayuta’s initial hidden intentions upon discovering her past, she has grown to care for and defend Denji wholeheartedly. She is the complete opposite of Makima. Therefore, if Makima had been raised in a different setting, she too would have been fundamentally altered.
