Is Michael Keaton playing the Joker? Rumor Explained

Following Robert Downey Jr.’s comeback to Marvel, it has been announced that another well-known hero will also be taking on a significant villain role. Rumors have surfaced that Michael Keaton will be the next actor to portray the infamous Joker.

If Bruce Wayne were to find out, he would likely be extremely angry. The Joker, known for his chaotic and reckless nature, is the exact opposite of Batman’s moral code. Throughout the history of the Gotham vigilante, the deranged clown has consistently remained one step behind.

Michael Keaton has been portraying Batman since Tim Burton’s 1989 superhero film, and most recently reprised the role in 2023’s The Flash. However, rumors suggest that he will now be playing Wayne’s nemesis in the upcoming film.

Is this statement accurate, or is it simply another instance of an online rumor gaining excessive traction?

Is Michael Keaton Using Joker Rumor to Take a Swipe at Marvel?

There is no need to worry, as there is no confirmation that Michael Keaton will be portraying the Joker. Any information suggesting otherwise is likely from a post on X that has been circulating.

On July 28, 2024, @KurzedZuko, an X user, shared a post announcing that Keaton had been chosen to play the role of Joker in the highly anticipated DC film, The Brave and the Bold.

The post has garnered 18.2k likes and sparked a debate among users, with some believing the statement and others pointing out that there has been no official confirmation of the casting. As of now, no actors have been announced for The Brave and the Bold, including Michael Keaton.

It is highly probable that this post is a reaction to the significant announcement that Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role in the MCU as Doctor Doom, which was revealed at San Diego Comic-Con on July 27, 2024.

The announcement sparked a divide among Marvel fans, with some ecstatic about their beloved Marvel star’s return and others disappointed by the predictable casting. Nevertheless, it was unprecedented that Downey Jr. would give up his hero role to portray one of the most notorious supervillains in history.

The notion that Keaton, who portrayed the Caped Crusader in both Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992), could potentially reprise his role as his on-screen adversary, is undoubtedly inspired by the recent RDJ news.

Until DC officially announces the cast for the upcoming Batman film, it can be assumed that Keaton will not be appearing in the movie as the Joker.

The Joker is already being played by two actors

Phoenix will make his comeback as the Joker in the upcoming sequel Joker: Folie à Deux, set in his own Joker-verse. He first took on the role of the Clown Prince of Crime in 2019 with the release of the first Joker film, and will now be joined by Harley Quinn in the highly anticipated sequel.

Barry Keoghan is the latest actor to portray Joker, and he has a certain sinister quality about him. In 2022, he made a brief appearance in Matt Reeves’ The Batman.

While the Riddler was imprisoned, he did make a brief appearance towards the end. However, his larger scene with Robert Pattinson’s Batman was ultimately removed. You can see it for yourself in the video below:

It is highly likely that Keoghan will have a bigger role in the upcoming sequel, The Batman 2. Other actors who have played the Joker in live-action will simply have to be patient and wait for their opportunity.
