It is surprising to see how closely the idol life is portrayed in the anime, with many scenes resembling real-life occurrences. While Aka Akasaka has not disclosed any information about the anime being inspired by these events, as fans, we are left to make our own speculations.
Ai Hoshino’s Stabbing is Based on a Real-Life Incident
The story of Oshi no Ko begins by providing us with the setting in which we are introduced to Ai Hoshino, a gifted idol. It is revealed that Ai is the mother of both Aqua and Ruby. As the lead singer of B-Komachi, Ai quickly rises to fame in Japan, gaining a massive following.
Despite giving birth to twins, Ai Hoshino’s joy is cut short when she is tragically stabbed by one of her deranged and jealous fans. This incident sets the stage for what unfolds later on – Aqua’s thirst for revenge and Ruby’s determination to surpass her mother’s success.
The stabbing of Ai Hoshino is based on real-life events, mirroring the 2016 attack on Japanese idol Mayu Tomita by a stalker fan.
Despite the differences from the anime series, Ms. Tomita managed to survive and called for assistance. The mangaka of Oshi no Ko Aka Akasaka has chosen not to address the allegations of a connection between the two occurrences.
2. Akane’s Ordeal Mirrors a Tragic Event

The cyber-bullying that Akane Kurokawa experiences is reminiscent of the challenges faced by Hana Kimura, a professional wrestler and reality TV personality. In the show, Akane appears on the reality dating series “LoveNow”and is subjected to online harassment.
In 2020, Hana Kimura appeared on the show “Terrace House”. However, her eagerness for attention resulted in her physically assaulting a fellow contestant, sparking widespread outrage online. This animosity towards Hana was exacerbated by her Indonesian heritage.
Despite enduring racial bullying and persistent online harassment, Hana Kimura ultimately succumbed to the pressure and took her own life. While Akane may have survived in the show, the tragic reality is that Kimura did not.
Kana Inspired by a Young Actor from Pacific Rim
Kana Arima is a prominent character in Oshi no Ko, known for her childhood genius that ultimately led to her downfall. She was once praised for her acting abilities and captivated audiences in numerous films and performances.
Despite her talent as a child prodigy, Kana’s chances of being chosen by directors and producers were diminished due to her arrogance and vulgar demeanor. As a result, she lost her charm and began to suffer from an inferiority complex.
The story of Kana closely resembles that of Ashida, a Japanese child actor who starred in popular films such as Pacific Rim. Typically, young actors have a significant advantage in securing roles as they age.
As she aged, Ashida’s success dwindled and she lost the heights she had achieved at just 3 years old. However, in the series, Kana is able to regain her confidence and become an idol once again with the support of Ruby and Aqua.
Despite never being officially confirmed, the author’s inspiration is evident in these events. They serve as a cautionary tale for those pursuing fame in showbiz and the idol world. Aka Akasaka subtly sheds light on the darker aspects of the industry.
4. About Oshi no Ko
Since April 2020, it has been serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Young Jump and is set to receive an anime adaptation in 2023.
The plot centers around Goro, a doctor who is reborn as the child of his beloved idol, Ai. The newborn is given the name Aquamarine by Ai, while his twin sister is named Ruby, a reincarnation of one of Goro’s patients. Tragically, Ai is murdered by a stalker who was also responsible for Goro’s death. In order to avenge his mother’s death, Aquamarine vows to seek revenge against the stalker. Following in her mother’s footsteps, Ruby also pursues a career as an idol.
