Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown marks the series’ return to its 2D roots. But what is its place in the canonical chronology? Here’s what it is.
The very first Prince of Persia game was launched in 1989. Ubisoft, however, did not release the first game. On the other hand, they then recovered the franchise and rebooted the series with The Sands of Time. This reboot has no connection with the original 2D platformers but has received several sequels.
The Prince of Persia series was later rebooted again by Ubisoft in 2008 with an open world entry. The 2008 reboot also has nothing in common with either the original 2D games or The Sands of Time.
The question is therefore whether Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is a sequel, a prequel or a reboot.
Is Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown a sequel, prequel or reboot?
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown could be seen as a prequel to The Sands of Time.
In an interview with RPS, game director Mounir Radi provided some answers. He said, “It could be seen and perceived as a prequel, because we use some specific elements from the previous Prince of Persia games, but in reality, it’s a whole new chapter.”
One thing Radi emphasized in his interview is that The Lost Crown is not a “reboot”, like The Sands of Time or 2008’s Prince of Persia. So, it appears that The Lost Crown takes place in the same universe as The Sands of Time. However, he remains independent. Only a few shared links and mechanics, such as temporal powers, are similar.
That’s it for Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown being a prequel or sequel. To learn more about the game as well as other Ubisoft titles, visit the Gaming section of our site.
