Despite reports suggesting that Seungri was in the process of setting up a nightclub in Hong Kong, the government has taken the opportunity to clarify the situation.
On May 23, multiple news outlets in Hong Kong reported that Seungri had permanently relocated to the city and was in the process of opening a nightclub. This rumor gained traction after a netizen claimed that their friend had spotted Seungri at Creamfields Hong Kong, a well-known music festival in the area.
It was discovered that the ex-BIGBANG member had intentions to conduct business in the East Tsim Sha Tsui region. According to reports, Seungri has been actively networking with alcohol suppliers and proprietors of clubs. He has also been spotted with female companions, whom netizens allege to be opportunistic individuals.
In response to the reports, the Hong Kong Government has issued an official statement refuting the allegations.
It was disclosed in a statement that a representative of the HKSAR Government confirmed that no visa application from Seungri for any talent admission schemes had been received. The government is committed to carefully reviewing and approving only eligible applicants.
According to their statement, South Korean citizens are eligible for visa-free travel in Hong Kong for a maximum of 90 days.
Their entire statement reads,
“In relation to media reports about a former Korean artiste who planned to move to Hong Kong and the talent admission schemes of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government were mentioned, a spokesman for the HKSAR Government clarified today (May 23) that the HKSAR Government has not received any visa application by the said person for any talent admission schemes. The relevant government departments will, in accordance with the established mechanism, play a robust gatekeeping role when processing applications for talent admission schemes to ensure only applications of eligible persons will be approved.
Currently, nationals of Korea (Republic of) can enjoy a visa-free period in Hong Kong for a visit not exceeding 90 days.”
Currently, Seungri has been in the public spotlight following the release of a BBC documentary about the “Burning Sun”scandal that occurred in 2018-2019.
