Hayao Miyazaki’s brand new film shined in cinemas around the world and won numerous awards, including the prestigious Oscar for Animated Film. Is it available to stream on Netflix?
Some directors are unable to retire, preferring to live for their art, and Hayao Miyazaki is a perfect example. The Japanese filmmaker, with a filmography as long as it is exceptional, is systematically unanimous regarding the quality of his work. And The Boy and the Heron, the latest product in the pure style of Studio Ghibli, has only further established the master’s supremacy over animated cinema.
After winning most of the prizes and awards imaginable, the feature film won the ultimate recognition with the Oscar for Best Animated Film. The director who was to retire after The Wind Rises has once again taken the box office by surprise, breaking several records with his new baby.
But The Boy and the Heron has finished filling theaters, and the question then arises: how to see Miyazaki’s latest film? Is it available for streaming?
Is The Boy and the Heron available to stream on Netflix?
Netflix announced on March 21, 2024 the “soon” arrival of the film The Boy and the Heron on its streaming platform. The feature film will join the Studio Ghibli collection, already in the catalog.

Indeed, the streaming giant had already signed a historic agreement with the Japanese house which saw the birth of some of the greatest classics of animated cinema. The films thus landed in the catalog from February 1, 2020. And the contract was all the more surprising as the studio was until then renowned for being cautious with streaming for its productions.
For the moment, the SVOD broadcast date of the film The Boy and the Heron has not yet been revealed. If we rely on the media timeline, spectators would have to wait 15 months after the last theatrical screenings, i.e. a release around April 2025.
However, as details of the deal have not been revealed, there remains a chance that Hayao Miyazaki’s film could appear on Netflix a little sooner.
