Is the K-Pop Industry on the Decline?

Despite the emergence of numerous idol groups that share striking similarities, the evidence is clear that their visuals, concepts, and sounds are becoming repetitive, causing fans to feel disenchanted. Recent incidents, such as ADOR’s CEO Min Hee Jin accusing HYBE’s newest girl group ILLIT of copying NewJeans, and debates surrounding LE SSERAFIM’s live performance skills and aespa Karina’s handwritten apology letter regarding dating rumors, only further highlight this issue.

In addition to stirring public opinion, these scandals have brought attention to the constraints holding back the Korean entertainment industry. The recent performance of LE SSERAFIM at the Coachella Music Festival on April 13 was met with shock and disappointment from their fans due to their lackluster live singing. Their subpar vocals left much to be desired.

The decline of the K-pop industry is becoming increasingly evident, as production techniques and music videos continue to follow repetitive themes. Fans are disappointed when they compare current idol groups to previous ones such as BIGBANG and 2NE1, who were highly praised for their unique styles. Cultural critic Sung Min Seong points out that as musical styles become more indistinguishable, K-pop fandoms must find alternative methods to differentiate between idol groups, such as focusing on their vocal abilities.

According to industry experts in Korea, the decrease in popularity of Kpop can be attributed to the neglect of skills and talents by artists and their companies. Despite large investments, numerous Kpop groups have been unable to achieve significant success on the global stage, raising concerns about the future of the Korean music industry.
