It’s Easier Than Ever to Catch Shiny Pokemon But Fans Remain Unsatisfied

Fans have noticed a potential issue with the number of Shiny Pokemon in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet. Since the unique-colored creatures were first introduced in Pokemon Gold & Silver, starting with the memorable Red Gyarados at Lake of Rage, the chances of encountering a Shiny have decreased from the original 1 in 8000 to about 1 in 4000.

Additionally, techniques like Shiny chaining, the Poke Radar, and Massive Mass Outbreaks, along with more recent methods such as Paldea’s Shiny Sandwich recipes, all contribute to increasing the chances of encountering one of these elusive treasures. Furthermore, completing the Pokedex also grants the player with the highly sought-after Shiny Charm, providing even more assistance in the search for these rare finds.

Game Freak delighted fans with the announcement of a series of Mass Outbreaks for Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, starting with one that centered around Pikachu and its companions. Popular creatures such as Pichu, Pikachu, and the Ghost-type Mimikyu were introduced into the game with a significant increase in Shiny encounter rates.

However, in a recent discussion on Reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/ShinyPokemon/comments/1e69e3h/ixdo_you_think_shinies_are_too_easy_to_get/), some players are contending that the numerous alterations have diminished the value of Shiny Pokemon, transforming them from prized possessions into mere tests of endurance.

The author’s post, titled “Is it Too Simple to Obtain Shinies Nowadays?”, features a photo of six Shiny Alolan Raichu and the accompanying caption, “I acquired these 6 in slightly over an hour by defeating all Pokemon in the ongoing event outbreaks, aided by the Shiny Charm. In my view, obtaining shinies has become too effortless.”

In comparison to older games, the current ones allow players to view approximately twenty Pokemon simultaneously on screen, rather than having to encounter them individually.

One comment points out the issue, saying, “The problem isn’t that they are necessarily easier, unless utilizing sandwiches or boosted odd events.” The main concern is the encounter rate of violet, as you can encounter hundreds of Pokémon much more quickly than in traditional games.

Despite this, some may argue that many modern Shiny Pokemon are indistinguishable from their non-Shiny counterparts. For instance, creatures such as Charcadet, Tandemaus, and Paldean Tauros are especially difficult to differentiate in their Shiny forms.

One commenter explains that while using it can speed up certain hunts, there are arguments to be made that it can also make the process more difficult. This is because some shiny Pokémon can look very similar to their normal versions, making it easy to miss them even when they are right in front of you.

Despite the debate over the frequency of Shiny Pokemon, there are numerous individuals who are satisfied with the rise in their collection. As one person remarks, “Overall? Yes. I didn’t encounter a Shiny until I was 31 or 32… But in the last 4 years, I have acquired a significant number. Not that I am complaining, as I find them fascinating.”

Ultimately, those who feel dissatisfied with the heightened Shiny odds have the choice to forgo any of the Shiny hunting techniques. According to one commenter, “if you want to stick with the original odds, don’t obtain the shiny charm or participate in outbreaks – that way, the chance of encountering a shiny remains at 1 in 4000.”
