K-Pop Idols Stand in Solidarity with Fans during Presidential Impeachment Rallies
Prominent K-pop figures, IU and Yuri from Girls’ Generation, have shown their unwavering support for fans participating in rallies advocating for the impeachment of South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol. This demonstration of solidarity took place in Seoul’s Yeouido district, where the two artists conveyed their care through thoughtful actions and warm gestures.
IUs Benevolent Gesture: Nourishing Fans
On December 13, IU’s agency, EDAM Entertainment, shared uplifting news through her official fan café. They announced that IU had arranged for food provisions for her devoted fans, known as Uaenas, who attended the rally. The message emphasized her concern: “To ensure Uaenas holding their light sticks in this cold weather can keep their hands warm, we’ve prepared food and hot packs. Please take care of your health and safety, and visit the designated stores to pick up the items.”
The generous offerings included 200 servings of bread, 200 beverages, 100 rice cakes, and 200 bowls of gukbap (rice soup), all available for fans at select bakeries, rice cake shops, and gukbap restaurants throughout the Yeouido area. Interestingly, the food was available to anyone by simply mentioning “Uaena”at the participating locations, underscoring a spirit of community. This initiative will run from December 14 until supplies last.
Yuri’s Culinary Contribution: Gimbap for the Cause
In a similar vein, Yuri has demonstrated her thoughtfulness by preparing gimbap for fans congregating at the candlelight rallies. On the same day, December 13, she reached out to her supporters via a fan platform, saying, “Eat the gimbap tomorrow and stay full. Stay safe and healthy. Sing Into the New World loud and proud!”
Yuri had already arranged for the gimbap to be pre-paid at a shop located near Dangsan Station. Fans could claim this thoughtful meal by presenting the Girls’ Generation light stick, “Sowonbong.” Additionally, Yuri took a moment on December 12 to express her admiration for fans’ dedication, advising them to keep warm during the gatherings.
Fans Unite: The Power of Music and Community
The rallies, aligned with the National Assembly, have seen an enthusiastic turnout of K-pop fans, proudly holding light sticks and singing iconic songs, including Girls’ Generation’s debut track, “Into the New World.” This song has become an anthem of empowerment, symbolizing unity and hope during these events. Yuri’s engagement further showcases her understanding of the fans’ commitment and the song’s significance.
