In a revealing post-finale interview held at the Ambassador Seoul Pullman Hotel on April 2, IU, the famed singer-actress, reflected on her transformative experience while working on Netflix’s acclaimed series “When Life Gives You Tangerines” . Her heartfelt discussions ranged from insights on love and marriage to her cherished relationships with co-stars.

When queried about whether the series prompted her to consider marriage, IU thoughtfully responded, “If I could have a husband like Gwan-sik and children like Geum-myung and Eun-myung, perhaps that would change my perspective on marriage. But life’s complexities make such decisions far from straightforward.”
“Gwan-sik Was a Fantastical Yet Realistic Character”
IU expressed deep admiration for Park Bo-gum, the actor who brought Gwan-sik, a beloved husband characterized by loyalty and tenderness, to life. She marveled at the writers’ ability to craft a character who felt both human and idyllic: “How did they create a figure as both realistic and dreamily perfect as Gwan-sik? Watching Bo-gum portray him was nothing short of surreal.”

She added, “Gwan-sik is undoubtedly a favorite among fans. His storyline was intricately developed, keeping me surprised right until the end. Even his departure was impactful. He exemplified extraordinary fatherhood, with moments steeped in happiness amidst sadness, elevating their love narrative to a deeply emotional level.”

In another note, IU commended Lee Jun-young, who portrayed the heart-wrenching character Yeong-bom. She remarked, “His character was profoundly moving, evoking empathy rather than hatred. He desperately sought his mother, and from Geum-myung’s viewpoint, I understood his plight. Yet his unyielding tears for his mother hindered their love.”
“Jun-young tackled a challenging role with finesse, conveying a range of emotions through repetitive lines, which enhanced my immersion in the story, ” she concluded.
“Ae-soon and Gwan-sik Were Unicorns to Each Other”
While discussing her dual roles as Ae-soon and Geum-myung, IU noted, “Ae-soon was fortunate to have Gwan-sik. Although his fantastical charm caught the fans’ attention, I was struck by the equal nature of their love; they were unicorns to each other, perfectly complemented.”

The emotional depth of IU’s portrayal has resonated powerfully with viewers globally, lending profound significance to a drama already regarded as one of Netflix Korea’s standout productions. Regardless of her future plans for marriage, fans are united in their appreciation — “When Life Gives You Tangerines” has indeed delivered a memorable love story.
