EDAM Entertainment Takes Legal Action Against Online Harassment Targeting IU
On November 11th, EDAM Entertainment, the agency representing the iconic South Korean artist IU, announced significant legal steps in response to persistent online harassment. The agency revealed they have lodged complaints addressing a range of severe illegal activities, including:
- Threats against IU
- Insults and defamation through the spread of false information
- Unfounded plagiarism allegations
- Sexual harassment and distribution of obscene materials
- Death threats and violations of privacy
- Creation and distribution of deepfake content
- Other types of illegal information dissemination
The agency’s statement highlighted the gravity of these actions, collectively referred to as “Illegal Acts.”To date, around 180 individuals have been identified as defendants, with more complaints being regularly filed as the situation develops.
As the legal proceedings unfold, preliminary rulings have been made, resulting in six misdemeanor fines, three conditional suspensions of indictment requiring mandatory education, and one case involving probation supervision. Notably, an individual accused of cyberbullying IU—through acts of defamation, sexual harassment, and issuing death threats—has received a fine of 3 million KRW. This individual is currently appealing the decision while awaiting the outcome of the formal trial.
In a startling revelation, IU’s agency indicated that one of the perpetrators defaming the artist via an overseas server may be an alumnus from her middle school. The agency remarked, “Among those involved, there is an individual believed to be IU’s former classmate who has persisted in harassing her despite ongoing legal actions, and we are addressing this issue.”
Furthermore, concerning another individual who propagated false rumors alleging espionage against IU, the investigative authorities have promptly identified the suspect and concluded the preliminary investigation. According to the agency, “The investigation was prolonged as the suspect repeatedly ignored summons from investigative authorities. However, this case has now been forwarded to the prosecution and is awaiting further action.”
In closing, EDAM Entertainment has asserted its commitment to confronting these unlawful activities, stating, “The Company has no intention of negotiating settlements or showing leniency towards any offenders. We are firm in our resolve to hold all malicious actors accountable and will continue to take decisive measures. We strongly urge those involved in illegal online conduct to cease their activities immediately.”
