IU’s Agency Faces Fan Backlash for Poor Communication About “Moving Without IU Knowing”

On October 21, a notification regarding the relocation of the office was shared on IU’s fan cafe. EDAM Entertainment announced, “As a result of our office move, the address has changed, and we want to provide you with the updated method for submitting support applications.” They also detailed the new address for fan mail and gifts, cautioning that any correspondence sent to the previous address would not be delivered.

Discussion in online forums and IU’s fan cafe revealed that IU herself was not informed about the agency’s relocation. Fans became aware of their fan letters being returned and directly questioned IU on her official fan cafe on October 20 whether the agency had indeed moved. IU replied, “Did they move without letting me know? As far as I know, they haven’t relocated yet.”

Following the inquiry, Sports Kyunghyang reached out to EDAM Entertainment to clarify whether IU had been informed about the relocation.

Currently, EDAM Entertainment manages only two artists: IU and WOODZ. This was emphasized by YouTuber Moon Sang-hoon during his appearance on Netflix’s “A-List to Playlist,” where he mentioned sending multiple emails to EDAM to book IU. To this, IU gladly accepted, stating, “You were trying to cast me? I’ll definitely join your show.”

Fan frustration with EDAM Entertainment has been escalating for a while. A significant controversy erupted in April when a fan was falsely accused of illegally reselling concert tickets, resulting in their absence from the concert and subsequent permanent expulsion from the fan club. EDAM later issued an apology, declaring, “We deeply regret any distress caused to the fan involved and are committed to resolving the matter amicably as quickly as possible.”

Despite the apology, fans continued to express their discontent, culminating in protests outside the agency involving trucks. Fans voiced their concerns, stating, “Amid the controversy over the management of illegal ticket reports, the artist, who was uninvolved in the operations, was unfairly spotlighted and faced backlash. The agency’s only responses were clarifications that further complicated the matter.”

IU first signed an exclusive contract with EDAM Entertainment on January 6, 2020. The agency was founded by Bae Jong-han, who has worked alongside IU since her debut.
