After the release of the MV teaser for their title track, “HEYA,”IVE has been accused of imitating Red Velvet. In response, fans of both DIVEs and ReVeluvs came to the defense of the junior girl group.
Is IVE’s ‘HEYA’ MV Teaser Too Similar to Red Velvet’s ‘Chill Kill’?
Leading up to IVE’s highly anticipated comeback on April 29 with “IVE Switch,”the six-member group has been sharing photo and video teasers to heighten the anticipation of their devoted fans, known as DIVEs.
On April 24, the team further aroused curiosity by releasing the MV teaser for their title track, “HEYA.”

The members of the group surprised viewers in the recently released 18-second MV teaser, which was shared on their various social media platforms. The video started with a blue scroll opening and then showed the members walking in line, led by a mystical tiger. Viewers were taken aback as the members’ faces were covered with cones.
Towards the end of the video, viewers caught a glimpse of a tiger encircling the sun, evoking images of a beloved fable where the tiger adored the sun. This sparked interest in the central narrative.
During the performance, the members stood out with their stylish outfits that incorporated an oriental flair. They further captivated viewers by accessorizing with Norigae (ornamental pendants), elevating their overall appearance.
In addition, IVE has garnered attention for their timeless elegance and mesmerizing group choreography, which exudes a dreamlike ambiance.

Upon the release of the teaser video, fans responded with praise, commending the group for their concept and song reminiscent of the second and third-generation of K-pop.
During this moment of excitement, a disagreement arose as K-Netz on Nate Pann and international fans on Reddit noticed the similarities between IVE and Red Velvet in terms of their concepts.
The original poster shared images from Red Velvet’s latest album “Chill Kill”and IVE’s MV teaser for “HEYA”on a Pann post that has gained around 220k views.
The original author briefly stated, “It is believed that IVE’s latest song will have a similar concept to Red Velvet’s.”
The post quickly became popular and several online users concurred, stating:
- “It’s so similar, haha.”
- “It’s okay, the difference in their skills is like heaven and earth.”
- “The kids who copy are of low quality.”
- “They are so similar I can’t even tell which one belongs to Red Velvet and IVE.”
Despite this, IVE has faced plagiarism accusations in the past when online users pointed out similarities in its concept to that of its senior group, Red Velvet.
In October 2023, when IVE released “Baddie,”the group faced criticism for the MV’s resemblance to Red Velvet’s “Ice Cream Cake.”
DIVEs and ReVeluvs Stand Up Against Plagiarism Allegations Targeting IVE
When IVE received unreasonable remarks, their fandom DIVE came to their defense and disproved the accusations of the group copying Red Velvet.
According to fans, the tiger and sun symbolism featured in IVE’s teaser is not only unique to Red Velvet’s concept, but also holds cultural significance in Korea.
Fans pointed out that the drawings had an oriental vibe and suggested that this was due to the use of a similar technique by the original artist, causing some overlap.
- “Oriental paintings (mountains, trees) and tigers are essential elements of the oriental style, so it’s a bit hard to see it as intentional plagiarism, and the overall atmosphere is just different. When the teaser for Red Velvet first came out there were a lot of people saying that it felt like a creepy and cruel fairy tale, but rather, IVE feels bright.”
- “To be honest, oriental landscape paintings are almost there, so what should we do? Should European-style buildings suddenly appear in oriental landscape paintings? Well, it’s similar, but since the concept of Orientalism overlaps, it’s impossible to express oriental paintings, tigers, Korean patterns, etc. in completely different ways. If you express Korean things too differently, you’ll be criticized for damaging the Korean elements, right? If you just look at oriental landscape paintings, they are almost there.”
- “If you look at the Instagram work of the oriental artist who painted this piece, you can see that he originally drew it like this, so what kind of plagiarism is this? It’s natural for oriental paintings to feature tigers, ink-and-wash paintings, mountains, and trees.”
The older audience members proceeded to leave comments such as:
- “Don’t use Red Velvet against IVE.”
- “Red Velvet fans are always looking at IVE warmly.”
- “I’ve been a fan of Red Velvet for 9 years and I haven’t heard of it. ReveLuvs are focusing on (Irene) exhibition right now, so I don’t think anyone will be interested.”
- “DIVEs, fighting!”
