A resonant call for action has emerged from the K-pop community, as a dedicated fan has highlighted the alarming cyberbullying directed at Ahn Yu-jin, a prominent member of the girl group IVE. This fan has urged Starship Entertainment to implement swift and effective measures to safeguard her from ongoing harassment.

On November 26, an individual known as “A” took to social media to express their distressing observations, revealing, “Unfortunately, I have some troubling news to share.” Their post outlined the shocking level of online abuse that Ahn Yu-jin has been subjected to, with claims that it has escalated to a degree that exceeds all expectations. They directly appealed to Starship Entertainment, stating, “Please take immediate action to combat the rumors and malicious comments.”

The concerned fan further urged the agency to prioritize the protection of Ahn Yu-jin’s public image, emphasizing that, “Malicious individuals are spreading false information and using Photoshop to defame her. The extensive and ongoing harassment has significantly tarnished her reputation as a celebrity.”

In addition to calling for protective measures, “A” expressed criticism towards the agency’s current marketing strategies. They argued that the tactics employed by Starship Entertainment have been unreasonable, saying, “Stop the misguided marketing strategies and rectify your approach. As the group leader, Ahn Yu-jin has shown unwavering commitment and accountability. However, the agency has exploited controversies surrounding the group as a marketing tool, transforming her into a target for unrelenting attacks and gossip.” The fan’s plea for a shift towards more constructive promotional methods highlights the need for responsible management in the entertainment industry.

Ahn Yu-jin first encountered backlash in China following the release of the “Heya” music video in April, which ignited debate among Chinese viewers. During the promotional phase, she characterized the video as an embodiment of “Korean beauty,” incorporating stage design and costumes reflective of traditional Korean culture. This description, however, drew accusations from some Chinese netizens, who claimed that the video appropriated elements of their own heritage, citing features like cloud patterns, scenic backdrops, and certain traditional attire as points of contention.

Commenting on the situation, Professor Seo Kyung-duk from Sungshin Women’s University remarked on the motivations behind these accusations. “Chinese netizens, driven by deep-seated inferiority complexes, are now going as far as to falsely accuse K-pop videos of stealing Chinese culture. It’s just another manifestation of their distorted Sinocentrism. It’s both frustrating and sad to see such baseless claims continue,” he stated, underscoring the complexities of cultural representation in the modern era.
