What happens in the movie?
The film by Hayao Miyazaki chronicles the story of Mahito, a young boy who experiences the loss of his mother in a devastating house fire during a time of war. Following this tragedy, Mahito’s father remarries Natsuko, the younger sister of his late mother. Eventually, the family is forced to flee Tokyo and seek shelter in Mahito’s mother’s ancestral home in the countryside.
In the meantime, Mahito attempts to cope with the loss of his mother. During this time, a Gray Heron starts to harass the boy. As Mahito grapples with these challenges, he is hit with another surprise when he discovers that Natusko is pregnant.
Despite the strange gray heron’s claims that Mahito’s mother could be saved and the suggestion to enter the mysterious tower near his house, the boy paid no attention and continued to stay away from the tower.
Regrettably, he was ultimately compelled to enter the tower when pregnant Natsuko mysteriously vanished and was seen entering it. Mahito ventured into the tower to save her, only to find himself plunged into a strange new world below his own, where the concepts of life and death were intertwined. Here, Mahito must locate Natsuko and perhaps grasp the true meaning of existence in order to safely make his way back home.
