Roy Jones Jr, who previously fought against Mike Tyson, has expressed interest in taking Tyson’s place in his postponed match against Jake Paul.
After experiencing a medical emergency, Tyson’s scheduled fight against Paul at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on Saturday, July 20 was postponed.
During his flight from Miami to Los Angeles, Tyson experienced dizziness due to an ulcer flare-up. Upon arriving at LAX airport, he was promptly treated by paramedics.
Despite assuring his fans that he was still able to fight in July, medical professionals have advised ‘Iron Mike’ to withdraw from the fight. As a result, the two parties are now collaborating to set a new date for late 2024.
Despite this, several fighters have still publicly challenged Paul to take Tyson’s place on the original fight date. Even former four-weight world champion, Jones Jr, has expressed interest in joining the competition.
“When asked if he would consider replacing Tyson, Jones responded to Betway by saying, “I am definitely considering it.”
“Given the current situation of the postponed fight between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul, I am considering getting into shape. This is something I never thought of doing before, but it seems like a good idea in case the fight does happen.”
“I support that idea and I will be prepared and physically fit. In the event that the fight does not occur, I have been considering the perfect candidate to replace Mike Tyson and fight Jake Paul. I am open to taking on the fight if it becomes available.”
In 2020, Jones had an exhibition match against Tyson which resulted in a draw. Now, given that Paul is willing to fight a much older Tyson, who is 30 years his senior, Jones, who is two years younger than ‘Iron Mike’, believes he could be the ideal replacement.
When questioned on his strategy for defeating Paul, Jones responded, “I haven’t considered that because my focus is always on being the best version of myself. I have never given thought to it, and instead, I rely on my abilities in the ring to figure it out.”
“Recently, there was speculation about a potential fight with Tommy Fury and someone even asked me about the possibility of an exhibition match with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, which is just absurd.”
“Although I was initially eager to jump on it, the recent development has convinced me that it would be wise to train with Jake Paul and participate in what could potentially be one of the most significant fights of this decade.”
