James Cameron’s Upcoming Movie Unrelated to Avatar

James Cameron has unveiled plans for an upcoming film, marking his first non-Avatar feature since the iconic Titanic in 1997.

For years, the Avatar franchise has occupied James Cameron’s focus. The acclaimed writer-director began crafting the narrative in the mid-1990s, with production of the first film kicking off in 2007 and its eventual release in 2009.

Following the success of Avatar: The Way of Water in 2022, Cameron has additional sequels slated for release in 2025, 2029, and 2031.

Now, as he prepares to wrap up the Avatar saga, it has been revealed that Cameron will tackle a World War II narrative set in Japan, centering on the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

According to Deadline, the forthcoming film is titled Last Train From Hiroshima, which draws inspiration from Charles Pellegrino’s book of the same title, as well as his upcoming release, Ghosts of Hiroshima.

Both of Pellegrino’s works include powerful testimonies from bomb survivors, and Cameron’s adaptation will focus on a character who endured the Hiroshima blast, only to face the subsequent explosion in Nagasaki, which he also survived.

“It’s a subject that I’ve wanted to do a film about, and I’ve been wrestling with how to approach it over the years,” Cameron explained to Deadline. “I met Tsutomu Yamaguchi, a survivor of both Hiroshima and Nagasaki, just days before he passed away.

“He was in the hospital, passing on his personal story to us, so I feel compelled to bring this narrative to life. I can’t turn away from it.”

Ghosts of Hiroshima is scheduled for release by Blackstone Publishing in August 2025, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the atomic bomb’s detonation.

Cameron’s next cinematic venture is Avatar: Fire and Ash, set for release on December 19, 2025. For those eager to catch films that will be hitting theaters before that, check out our guide to the best new releases this month.
