James Gunn Responds to Backlash Over The Batman 2 Delay

For fans eagerly anticipating the return of the Dark Knight, the announcement that The Batman 2 has been postponed to October 1, 2027 from its initially scheduled release in October 2026 has cast a shadow over this Christmas season. However, DC’s co-head James Gunn has offered a defense for this significant delay, emphasizing that such setbacks are not uncommon within the film industry.

The new 2027 release date means a gap of five years since director Matt Reeves first introduced audiences to his gripping vision of Gotham in The Batman (2022). He stated, “To be fair, a 5 year gap or more is fairly common in sequels,” citing examples like the seven-year gap between Alien and Aliens, and the 13 years that lapsed between Avatar films.
