James Gunn’s DC Universe Begins Sooner Than Expected

Fans eagerly anticipating James Gunn’s DC Universe can start getting excited, as the highly anticipated release of Creature Commandos is set to happen sooner than originally planned.

The information was revealed at the Annecy International Animation Festival during a Warner Bros. panel, stating that Creature Commandos will make its debut in December 2024.

The December release date of Creature Commandos puts it at the forefront of James Gunn’s new DC Universe, making it a surprisingly early addition. While the series is considered the true beginning of the DCU, it is worth noting that Peacemaker, Blue Beetle, and The Suicide Squad are already included in some form.

Creature Commandos is a cartoon show adapted from a DC Comics group of extraordinary beings that bear a striking resemblance to traditional monsters. The initial lineup was comprised of a vampire, a werewolf, a gorgon, and a Frankenstein’s monster, all under the command of a human soldier named Lt. Matthew Shrieve.

The DC Universe Creature Commandos were initially revealed in January 2024, and will be under the guidance of Rick Flag Sr. (voiced by Frank Grillo). The team will consist of Princess Ilana Rostovic (Maria Bakalova), Bride of Frankenstein (Indira Varma), Nina Mazursky (Zoe Chao), Doctor Phosphorous (Alan Tudyk), Circe (Anya Calotra), and G.I. Robot (Sean Gunn).

The upcoming series, Creature Commandos, will see the return of John Economos from Peacemaker and Weasel from The Suicide Squad. While the details of the plot are currently unknown, director James Gunn has suggested that the show will delve deeper into the mysterious character of Weasel.

Creature Commandos will debut in the DC Universe ahead of the highly anticipated release of the first major film, Superman, in July 2025. All seven episodes of Creature Commandos will also be made available on Max.

In the meantime, while you anticipate the release of Creature Commandos and Superman on the big screen, you can also familiarize yourself with other upcoming DC films such as Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, The Batman 2, and Joker 2.
