Jang Dong-gun Addresses Speculations About Seol Kyung-gu’s Acting Skills

On October 11, a YouTube livestream brought together renowned actors Kim Hee-ae, Seol Kyung-gu, and Jang Dong-gun, who reflected on their extensive acting careers. The trio, featuring in the film Ordinary Family, engaged in insightful discussions with producer Na Young-seok for a video titled “Families Who Don’t Joke Around,” aired on the YouTube channel “Channel 15.”

Jang Dong-gun reminisced about his first role in the 1992 drama Son and Daughter, stating, “I filmed scenes with wildflowers in the bushes.” He recounted his beginnings at MBC as a trainee and spoke about the unusual moments he experienced, including shooting scenes while holding branches and straw. Notably, Kim Hee-ae was also part of the cast in Son and Daughter.

Seol Kyung-gu shared his experience of being turned down during the MBC audition process. He expressed his disappointment, mentioning, “Although I graduated from the theater and film department, my application got stuck in the stack and was missed.” He eventually landed a role thanks to the well-known writer Jung Sung-joo.

In a light-hearted exchange, Jang Dong-gun recounted industry rumors surrounding Seol Kyung-gu, saying, “People were talking about a newcomer who acted quite oddly.” Seol Kyung-gu later discovered these gossip tales through Jang Dong-gun’s recounting.

Reflecting on her initial journey in acting, Kim Hee-ae mentioned that she contemplated leaving the industry at the young age of 20 due to uncertainties about her future. She described the filming conditions back then, saying, “Everything felt so rudimentary. We shot scenes on a cart that could have tipped over at any moment,” and remarked on the numerous perilous situations that left her feeling as though she might be in danger. She shared how her passion for acting flourished over time, leading her to return to the profession after a seven-year break following her marriage.

The actors also elaborated on the film Ordinary Family. Jang Dong-gun outlined their familial roles, stating, “In spite of the intricate conflicts, our family portrayal emphasizes a strong bond.” Kim Hee-ae described the narrative as showcasing how an ordinary family’s dynamics evolve due to unique circumstances.

Their rapport with producer Na Young-seok was notably acknowledged. Na reminisced about collaborating with Kim Hee-ae a decade ago on Sisters Over Flowers and praised her enduring career that began in the 1980s. Kim Hee-ae reflected, “Time truly flies. When I look back, ten or twenty years seem like just a moment.”
