According to Japanese media sources, the animosity towards LE SSERAFIM is thought to be fueled by increasing anti-Japanese sentiments in South Korea.
Despite the recent incidents causing a rise in anti-Japanese sentiment in Korean society, foreign media outlets have reported that the entertainment industry is also being affected.
On May 21, 2024, JBPRESS, a Japanese media outlet, released a report stating that the girl group LE SSERAFIM from HYBE, which includes Japanese members, is receiving criticism from online users due to growing anti-Japanese sentiments.
LE SSERAFIM consists of Sakura Miyawaki, previously a member of the Japanese girl group KHT48, and Kazuha Nakamura, who made her debut in the entertainment industry with the group. Sakura, who was already a well-known celebrity due to her work as a J-Pop idol and with IZ*ONE, played a significant role in the group’s rise to fame and continues to be one of their most beloved members.
Lately, there has been criticism directed towards not just Sakura, but the entire group of LE SSERAFIM for being a pro-Japanese imperialism girl group.
Previously, internet users have alleged that the promotional video for “Burn the Bridge,”a song from LE SSERAFIM’s debut album “UNFORGIVEN,”which was released in May of last year, featured right-wing themes.
The commentators contended that the initial scene, which depicts red ink seeping onto a white floor, alludes to Japan’s “Rising Sun”flag. Moreover, they asserted that the backdrop of a red sunset symbolizes the present-day Japanese flag. The scene in which blue liquid is injected into a tree against the sunset is interpreted as a representation of the Korean spirit (blue) being integrated into Japan.
Last year, these claims were shared on the internet, but they were first rejected as unfounded conspiracy theories.

Despite the growing online prevalence of anti-Japanese sentiment, these accusations are once again receiving widespread attention.
According to Japanese media sources, viewers of LE SSERAFIM’s music videos have been expressing these sentiments in the YouTube comments. The girl group has been labeled as traitors by some, as there is a belief that they promote Japanese values even though they are a K-pop group.
Several comments stated,
- “A bunch of traitor idols.”
- “It’s not a coincidence that they introduced the Japanese flag.”
- “I can’t tell if they are a K-pop or J-pop group.”
Source Music, the agency of LE SSERAFIM, has yet to make a statement regarding the hate.
