Amazon MGM is gearing up for a thrilling new live-action adaptation of the beloved franchise, Masters of the Universe, with a significant casting announcement that sees Jared Leto take on the role of the iconic villain, Skeletor.
This upcoming film, directed by Travis Knight, known for his work on Bumblebee, represents the second attempt to bring He-Man to the big screen, following the 1987 iteration featuring Dolph Lundgren. The He-Man saga originally burst onto the scene in 1982 through a toy line from Mattel, which quickly evolved into a popular cartoon series, captivating audiences with 65 episodes over two seasons.
The cultural impact of the He-Man franchise is noteworthy, particularly in its influence on modern internet memes. Skeletor, as He-Man’s formidable adversary, has become a meme sensation, showcasing the character’s enduring appeal. With such a high-profile project on the horizon, the selection of the right actor to embody Skeletor is paramount. Recent updates also reveal several additional antagonists who will confront He-Man, further elevating the stakes.
Jared Leto Takes on the Role of Skeletor
The exciting news comes from a recent announcement indicating that Jared Leto will portray the skull-faced Skeletor in the film, which is set to hit theaters on June 5, 2026. Leto joins a dynamic cast that includes Sam C. Wilson as Trap Jaw, Kojo Attah as Tri-Klops, and Hafthor Bjornsson, popularly known from Game of Thrones, as Goat Man.
In this reimagining, Skeletor will face off against He-Man, played by Nicholas Galitzine. The screenplay for this iteration is penned by Chris Butler (of ParaNorman fame), who builds upon a draft created by David Callaham, with contributions from directors Aaron and Adam Nee. These directors were initially attached to a live-action adaptation that was set to debut on Netflix before its untimely cancellation in mid-2023.
The current landscape is ripe for live-action adaptations of Mattel toy lines, particularly in light of the success of the recent Barbie film, which not only achieved impressive box office numbers but also garnered critical acclaim and sparked talks of sequels. While expectations for He-Man’s success should be tempered, the team clearly aims to capture a fresh audience and leverage the renewed respect for adaptations derived from toy lines.
