CEO Addresses Tragic Plane Crash

In a heartfelt press conference on December 29th, Jeju Air’s CEO, Kim, expressed deep sorrow regarding the recent catastrophic airline accident. He stated, “Regardless of the cause of the accident, as the CEO, I fully acknowledge my responsibility. Once again, I pray for the repose of the passengers who lost their lives and extend my heartfelt apologies to the bereaved families.”

While Kim acknowledged the immense tragedy, he also cautioned that determining the exact cause of the incident is currently challenging. He emphasized the necessity of waiting for a thorough investigation by government agencies, stating, “We must wait for the official investigation report from the relevant government agencies.” The CEO committed to prioritizing assistance for affected families, assuring that the airline would fully cooperate with authorities to uncover the cause of this devastating event.

Details of the Incident

An emergency meeting convened earlier at Jeju Air’s Aviation Support Center in Gangseo District, Seoul, where Kim met with all executives and team leaders to discuss immediate actions. The incident occurred around 9:07 AM when Jeju Air Flight 7C 2216, traveling from Bangkok, Thailand to Muan, South Korea, veered off the runway at Muan International Airport, ultimately colliding with an outer perimeter fence. The flight was carrying 175 passengers and six crew members.

According to reports, South Jeolla’s Fire Department dispatched 32 fire trucks and 80 personnel to manage rescue operations and extinguish the fires.

Current Casualty Estimates

Initial reports indicate a devastating toll, with 179 people presumed dead and only two survivors rescued so far. The National Fire Agency has suggested that the crash could have been triggered by a bird strike that may have incapacitated the landing gear, marking a tragic turn of events.

The aircraft involved was 15 years old and had previously maintained an incident-free record; however, an investigation will be conducted to ascertain if there were any prior malfunctions.
