On July 10, MBN reported on CNN’s coverage of Jennie’s vaping controversy. The report showed Jennie smoking an e-cigarette indoors and in the presence of staff. Additionally, the media revealed that ODD ATELIER had issued an apology following the incident.
Despite this, MBN reported that CNN had commented, “K-pop stars face intense public scrutiny.”Along with this statement, MBN also discussed aespa Karina’s apology for her dating rumors with Lee Jae Wook in March.
Conversely, MBN also posted BBC’s report on the issue, which shed light on the oppressive treatment and intense scrutiny that K-pop idols experience in South Korea.
“According to the statement, Korean celebrities have grown accustomed to facing such intense scrutiny. It was also noted that in South Korea, K-pop stars are expected to strictly adhere to moral and behavioral standards and any mistakes are not tolerated.“
The reports were met with negative reactions from Korean netizens, who expressed their frustration.
- “That’s not a mistake but her personality.”
- “Did they really compare dating with indoor smoking?”
- “That wasn’t a mistake.”
- “What? So they’re blaming Korea?”
- “They really pretend like they’re not just as harsh as us sigh.”
- “This just shows that overseas have no morals.”
- “BBC? No but they’re known to have f**king bad hate comments, why are they bullsh**ting?”
- “Do foreigners know no manners? They’d shoot us to death if we blew our cigarette smoke in their faces.”
- “Mistake?”
- “Do you really do that by mistake? There are Korean laws right?”
Fans from around the world also shared their thoughts on the issue.
- “These foreign articles always try to highlight anything negative related to K-pop.”
- “Insane behavioral standards for idols are negative no matter how you look at it.”
- “It’s not about the smoking, or even smoking indoors. What turned me off was the fact she couldn’t wait 5 minutes for the staff to finish their job so she could smoke.”
- “Not to defend her but this controversy got way too much attention compared to worse things to the point it’s getting ridiculous.”
- “BBC saying that like the average British person wouldn’t bulldoze you for smoking indoors.”
- “I think in some ways, Korea is admirable for upholding standards and keeping celebrities accountable because Hollywood celebs get away with some of the worst things.”

There are other pressing issues in that country than focusing on an adult woman doing what everyone else is already doing. She already apologized. Period. https://t.co/2w0t4qYWij
