Jeon Somi Teases New Single ‘Ice Cream’ Amid Accusations of Copying BLACKPINK

Prior to her highly-anticipated return, Jeon Somi was embroiled in a plagiarism controversy when K-Netz raised concerns about the similarities between her concept and BLACKPINK’s “Ice Cream”.

On July 29, Jeon Somi’s agency, THEBLACKLABEL, revealed the album cover and main concept photos, announcing the soloist’s highly anticipated comeback.

According to the article, the artist is scheduled to make a comeback in the music industry on August 2 at 1 p.m. KST, approximately eight months after her previous release, “Ex-Mas,”in December of last year.

As a solo artist, she has rapidly gained popularity as the “Summer Queen,”with a string of successful singles including “What You Waiting For,””DUMB DUMB,”and “Fast Forward.”

Upon hearing this news, fans of K-pop, particularly SOMMUNGCHIs, eagerly expressed their excitement and curiosity about the type of music and identity Somi will reveal this time.

During this time, she built up excitement with her summer special single “Ice Cream,”which showcased a poster displaying the bold blend of pastel pink and yellow.

Another picture captured her with her hand raised high, almost as if she were greeting someone in a snack bar filled with quirky and retro decorations.

Jeon Somi’s bubbly charm was accentuated by her trademark cheerful expression and blonde hair styling that she emitted.

Furthermore, various elements that allude to the tone of the recently released song “Ice Cream,”including the edible treat held by the singer, the displayed poster reading “JEON SOMI’S Ice Cream Shop,”and the themed attire, are attracting considerable interest.

Regrettably, the joy experienced by Somi’s fans was short-lived as some BLINKs flooded the comments and quotes with speculations that she had plagiarized her concept and title from BLACKPINK.

Despite the inevitable overlap of concepts and names in K-pop songs, fans have expressed skepticism over the striking similarities in the track’s title, colors, fonts, and concept. Many believe that they may have been borrowed from another group. However, some BLINKs have clarified that their frustration is not directed towards Somi, but towards TBL CEO Teddy.

As one of the key individuals involved in the creation of BLACKPINK and Selena’s “Ice Cream,”he is well aware of the potential consequences should Jeon Somi release a song with the same title and similar visual elements.

On the other hand, SOMMUNGCHI stood up for the star and suggested that BLACKPINK does not have exclusive rights to the concept or the term “ice cream,”and therefore cannot prevent Jeon from using it.

Furthermore, Somi’s “Ice Cream”is not the first song to be released with that title, leading fans to question why there was an issue only when BLACKPINK did it.
