As excitement builds for tomorrow’s teaser unveiling a new Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film, it’s worth reflecting on Jesse Eisenberg’s portrayal of the iconic villain. Despite being seen as a highlight in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Eisenberg’s performance had significant repercussions for his career.
Critics widely panned Batman v Superman for various reasons, including its complex narrative and the controversial design of Doomsday, the formidable foe. While Eisenberg’s depiction of Lex Luthor showcased a unique and maniacal persona with an awkward touch, the broader negative reception of the film didn’t spare him from the fallout that followed.
Surprising Career Impact of the Negative Reception
In a recent discussion with Dax Shepard on the podcast Armchair Expert, Eisenberg expressed his astonishment at how the backlash affected his professional trajectory. “I was involved in this ‘Batman’ movie, and both the film and my performance received such negative feedback,” he revealed.
Reflecting on the experience, Eisenberg admitted, “I’ve never shared this before, and it’s somewhat embarrassing, but I believe it genuinely hindered my career because I was associated with such a public failure.” The weight of this high-profile movie, backed by Warner Bros. and drawing in immense comic book fandom, was a double-edged sword for him.
Despite typically avoiding reading reviews and critical commentary, Eisenberg noted that the movie’s perception was unavoidable due to its visibility. He explained, “I’ve participated in projects that were poorly received yet slipped under the radar, but this was different. It was so public, and I didn’t realize just how negatively it had impacted me.”
Diving deeper, Eisenberg provided insight on industry dynamics: “In Hollywood, when you’re linked to a blockbuster that doesn’t perform well, it tarnishes your reputation. The decision-makers may steer clear of casting you in future roles. I truly cherished my role and the filmmaking process, which is why I felt partly responsible for what happened—I had to work hard to rebuild my standing.”
Despite the hurdles from his past role as Lex Luthor, not all is bleak for the talented actor. Eisenberg is currently gaining recognition for his directorial debut, A Real Pain, which is now being considered a competitive Oscar contender. While he doesn’t anticipate a return to the role of Lex Luthor, he has offered words of encouragement to Nicholas Hoult as he prepares to step into the character in Superman: Legacy.
