Jo Jung-suk’s Journey: From Military Service Exemption Due to Financial Hardship to Earning ₩100 Million Per Episode

Initially accepted at the Seoul Institute of the Arts with aspirations of an acting career, Jo Jung-suk faced significant financial challenges that compelled him to secure student loans while also providing for his family.

At that time, exemptions for military service due to financial hardship required applicants to have assets under ₩13 million and a monthly income of less than ₩180,000. Jo Jung-suk met these qualifications and was granted the exemption.

Subsequently, Jo Jung-suk prioritized generating income over his academic pursuits. He immersed himself in musical theater performances while diligently supporting his mother, despite earning a modest income.

Following the announcement of Jo Jung-suk’s military exemption, allegations arose suggesting that he was evading military duty.

However, as details about his family’s financial hardships began to circulate, public sentiment shifted towards empathy.

Today, Jo Jung-suk is celebrated as a remarkable actor, frequently featuring in blockbuster films and highly-rated dramas, firmly establishing himself as a sought-after talent in both sectors.

In his film debut, “Architecture 101,” Jo Jung-suk left a formidable impression despite only having 10 minutes of screen time, reportedly commanding around ₩100 million for this role.

Currently, his film fees have escalated to ₩200 million per project, while he earns ₩100 million for each episode of a drama, showcasing his remarkable ascent in the industry.
