Joe Rogan was left in tears upon discovering how comedian Chris Distefano formed a friendship with New York Mets owner Steve Cohen by failing miserably at a private event.
During his appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience, Chris Distefano donned a New York Mets jersey and shared the hilarious reason behind his fandom, leaving Joe in fits of laughter.
Distefano shared that Steve Cohen’s wife had enlisted his services to do standup comedy at a private event celebrating her 60th birthday. She was anticipating the presence of the entire family of the sports team owner.
The comedian found himself having to handle only Cohen and his ten companions, who were completely unaware that a comedy show was taking place.
“He explained that a billionaire in their sixties doesn’t have any idea who I am,”which elicited a groan from Rogan.
In addition, Distefano clarified that there was no microphone or any lights in the entire setup, only a small room with ten men having dinner. To add to the predicament, Cohen’s assistant went as far as saying “it doesn’t seem like they will approve of you,”causing Joe to burst into laughter.
Despite his initial failure and the teasing from the other men, Chris eventually attempted to do his part. However, it was Cohen who saved the day by promising to double Chris’s pay if he could make him laugh with his best five minutes.
Despite initially declining, after testing out his David Letterman set, Cohen ended up laughing and accepting a doubled salary. However, before finalizing the deal, the comedian was required to sign numerous NDAs regarding the event.
Distefano hypothesized that the NDAs were a result of the private event’s location and timing. The following day, he discussed this on his podcast with Sal Vulcano, leading to threats from Cohen’s legal team.
Despite the lawyers’ initial pursuit, Cohen’s family, who were avid listeners of the podcast, had privately messaged him on Instagram to express their admiration. As a result, the lawyers eventually withdrew their actions.
Chris Distefano has become good friends with the Mets owner.
“Chris explained that the family has become his friends, reminiscing on the times he was able to attend games without paying. On one occasion, Steve even allowed the comedian to perform a set during a rain delay, but unfortunately, it did not go well.”
Rogan couldn’t help but burst into laughter when he heard about Distefano’s failed performance at the Mets game. Distefano’s choice of attire, a floral shirt and a small microphone, only added to the hilarity of the situation.
“I was failing miserably in front of a crowd of 30,000 people. Interestingly, Steve Cohen and his companions were howling with laughter because they had predicted my failure. Steve even comforted me, saying ‘you’re doing just fine, man.’”
Fortunately, despite the two terrible performances, Distefano managed to make a very well-known acquaintance – something that Joe Rogan was completely blown away by.
