Joe Rogan recently described Joe Exotic, the star of Tiger King, as “fascinating” and shared that the infamous criminal frequently reaches out to him from prison.
On September 17, Rogan hosted the filmmakers Eric Goode and Jeremy McBride from Tiger King during an episode of his JRE podcast, where they discussed Joe Exotic, who is currently serving a 22-year prison sentence.
Exotic, whose real name is Joseph Allen Maldonado, was arrested in 2019 on 17 federal counts of animal abuse and two counts of attempted murder for hire, after he allegedly plot to kill animal activist Carole Baskin.
Despite being incarcerated, Rogan revealed that Exotic “constantly” messages him, hoping that Rogan can assist in his efforts to get exonerated. “He was constantly, after I talked about Tiger King, I get messages from that guy,” Rogan explained. “I don’t know how he’s giving me messages. I’m assuming it’s somebody who works for him.”
“But, I get messages all the time. Like, ‘You’ve gotta help get him out, put him on your podcast,’ do this, do that,” he added.

McBride informed listeners that Exotic has “communication in jail,” stating, “Somehow, he’s able to get his phone. He’s doing video calls.”
Rogan further praised Exotic’s charisma, stating that if he weren’t imprisoned, he could have enjoyed a successful career. “He’s just got all this personality, and he’s so interesting and fascinating. It’s really unfortunate. If he wasn’t in jail, he’d be a very popular person,” Rogan remarked.
Fans of the JRE podcast quickly took to the comments to express their support for Exotic’s release, with one comment reading, “Save Joe Exotic! He was a funny guy.” Another fan praised Goode and McBride’s Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness as “the greatest television show” they had ever encountered.
Although Exotic’s release doesn’t seem imminent, the podcast trio did mention that his name was allegedly added to a list for “presidential pardons.”
Nevertheless, Exotic was re-sentenced in January 2022 and is unlikely to be released until 2035. “If I ever make it out of this alive, all I want to do is move on with my life,” Exotic stated during the resentencing in Oklahoma City federal court.
Outside of discussing Exotic, Rogan also engaged in a conversation about the upcoming fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson. He expressed disappointment at the prospect of Paul knocking out Tyson and even voiced a desire for the match not to take place at all.
