Jogo siding with Kenjaku was the biggest irony in Jujutsu Kaisen (& for a compelling reason)

Jujutsu Kaisen skillfully blends intense action and intricate storytelling, incorporating elements of tragedy, mystery, grief, camaraderie, loyalty, optimism, and selflessness. Each character possesses their own individuality and serves a crucial purpose, often leaving viewers impressed or uncertain. Among these characters is the formidable Cursed Spirit, Jogo.

Upon his early introduction in the series, he is depicted as a formidable Curse with a single goal – to replace humans with Curses. In order to achieve this, he aligns himself with Geto (also known as Kenjaku) and aids him in his scheme to seal away Gojo Satoru. While this may seem straightforward, there is a subtle irony upon further examination.

The Irony of Jogo Choosing to Side with Kenjaku in Jujutsu Kaisen

It is ironic that Jogo has sided with Kenjaku/Pseudo-Geto. This is because Jogo is fiercely dedicated to his kind and their welfare. He took great pride in being a Cursed Spirit and had one ultimate objective – to create a world where Curses reigned supreme, as he believed that Curses were the true Humans.

Suguru Geto’s goal was to eliminate all Curses by eliminating non-sorcerers, whom he believed were responsible for their creation. On the other hand, Kenjaku’s interest lied in the study of Cursed Energy (CE) and his desire to deepen his understanding of it. His ultimate ambition was to merge Master Tengen and all non-sorcerers in Japan into a single being.

As a result of taking control of Geto’s corpse, he was able to disguise himself as the sorcerer and gain the allegiance of Cursed Spirits such as Jogo, Hanami, Mahito, and Dagon. It is believed that they saw him as Geto rather than Kenjaku. This is where the irony lies, as someone like Jogo who was deeply committed to Curses despised the idea of them being exorcised, causing him to become agitated.

Despite partnering up with someone whose Cursed Technique was even more feared by Curses than exorcism, he continued to use his own technique of absorbing and controlling them for his own purposes. Essentially, he was taking away their freedom and using them as pawns in his plans.

Despite this, Jogo’s decision to side with Kenjaku can be understood. He believed that Kenjaku was aligned with Geto’s ultimate goal, and that in order to achieve it, some sacrifices were necessary. Otherwise, fans would question why the passionate Jogo would simply stand by and allow his comrades to be manipulated and used as weapons.

Jujutsu Kaisen does not explicitly state if the Disaster Curses were aware of Pseudo-Geto’s true identity. Throughout their interactions, they consistently referred to him by his corpse’s name and likely believed him to be the genuine Geto. Despite their seemingly friendly relationship, it is apparent that they were merely using each other to further their own individual goals.

Conclusion

It was not unexpected that Kenjaku would manipulate the Disaster Curses to his advantage. He was aware that directly absorbing them would be difficult, so he bided his time for the opportune moment. This was evident when he absorbed a weakened Mahito after the battle with Yuji and Todo Aoi.

Despite Hanami’s death at the hands of Gojo and Jogo’s incineration by Ryomen Sukuna’s flaming arrow, it is highly probable that Kenjaku would have still managed to absorb both of them if these events had not taken place, considering their exceptional abilities.

Despite this, there is a valid reason for Jogo’s ironic decision to side with Kenjaku. However, he too was ultimately deceived in some manner.
