John Wick 5 is reportedly in “active development,” but fans shouldn’t expect it to materialize in the near future. Should it proceed, it will have to satisfy one key requirement.
While John Wick: Chapter 4 is acclaimed as one of the finest action films ever made, it also provided a fitting closure for Keanu Reeves’ legendary assassin, giving him the gift of presumed death.
However, as the John Wick Cinematic Universe continues to expand with projects like Ballerina and a spin-off featuring Donnie Yen’s character Caine (let’s conveniently overlook The Continental), the emergence of John Wick 5 feels almost unavoidable.
Chad Stahelski, who serves as the franchise’s custodian, acknowledged the potential for a fifth film in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
“Is there room for opportunity? Absolutely, whether it be financially or creatively. There’s definitely a chance, but it encourages our contemplation,” he stated.
“In the last three years, I’ve brainstormed three or four distinct concepts for John Wick 5. They offered various angles to approach the narrative, but it’s essentially a mental exercise for me.”
No matter the direction John Wick 5 ultimately takes, it has been confirmed that it will feature a “totally new storyline.”
“We can’t surpass what we’ve achieved. That’s the finale. That’s the understanding. We’ve reached a resolution,” Stahelski elaborated.
“We have some fantastic concepts in mind, and they won’t be tied to the storyline of [John Wick: Chapter 4]. It’s not what you might anticipate. If we can ever devise a plot that Keanu and I agree is exceptional and feels authentic, then that would be a positive development.
“However, concerning [Chapter 4], I feel we’ve reached our peak. That’s my pinnacle. We closed that chapter. I view it now and feel immense satisfaction, but we wouldn’t aim to outshine it. We wouldn’t attempt to extend it.”
Reeves has kept his comments on John Wick 5 minimal, simply stating, “Never say never.”
“I wouldn’t participate in a John Wick film without Chad Stahelski. We would need to explore what that would entail. For me, it seems fitting that John Wick finds his peace,” he told Entertainment Weekly.
Meanwhile, Stahelski is also working on an anime adaptation of John Wick as well as a new series titled Under the High Table. For now, don’t forget to check out the latest films this month.
