Joker 2 may be categorized as a comic book film, yet the Clown Prince of Crime’s escapades are not appropriate for younger viewers, as highlighted by the movie’s age rating.
Over time, the portrayal of superheroes and supervillains has evolved from light-hearted, cartoon-like representations to more gritty and realistic crime narratives. Each new portrayal of the Joker tends to be more violent and cunning, suggesting that his latest films may not be suitable for all audiences.
Featuring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, Joker: Folie à Deux brings Harley Quinn into the dark world of Gotham. As Arthur Fleck’s trial unfolds, the streets of Gotham witness a surge of rebellion inspired by their new symbol of hope.
But is Joker 2 a musical? Surely it can’t be that inappropriate?
What is the age rating for Joker 2?
Joker 2 is rated R in the US by the MPAA for “strong violence, language throughout, some sexuality, and brief full nudity.”
According to MPAA guidelines for the R rating, parents should evaluate the film before allowing young children to see it. Essentially, if you are under 17, entry is not permitted without a parent or guardian.
In the UK, Joker 2 has received a 15 rating from the BBFC, which cites “strong violence, language, and brief sex.” No one younger than 15 years can view the film in a cinema.
Joker 2 is unsuitable for young children
As established in the first film, Joker is set in a ferociously violent version of Gotham. Arthur Fleck is depicted as a menacing figure who commits graphic murders, and while we do not yet know the specific level of violence or nature of the killings in Joker 2, it is likely to continue the trend, if not become even more brutal.
Given this context, it’s advisable for parents to preview the film first or to refrain from showing it to younger audiences altogether.
