Todd Phillips is preparing to bring the clowns back with his latest film, Joker: Folie à Deux. However, if you’re anticipating his return for Joker 3, you may be disappointed.
The 2019 film Joker is widely considered to be one of the most significant comic book movies of the last decade. Not only did it achieve record-breaking success, but it also earned its place as one of the top-grossing films of all time (although Deadpool and Wolverine have since surpassed its R-rated record).
Encouraged by the (initial) enthusiastic responses and its exceptional financial success, Warner Bros. granted Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix the approval to continue Arthur Fleck’s journey in another installment.
In October, Joker 2 will be released in theaters, delving into the aftermath of the first film’s chaos. In Arkham Asylum, Arthur will encounter his soulmate, Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn.
The film is expected to be one of the top movies of 2024, unless it is a complete failure. The chief of the Venice Film Festival has already praised it as one of the boldest American films in recent times, and it is projected to surpass the $1 billion mark once again.
Therefore, is there any possibility of a third movie? Phillips discussed the topic of a potential Joker 3 in a conversation with Variety, though not for the reason that you might be anticipating.
“According to him, while it was enjoyable to work in this particular environment for two films, he believes that they have successfully conveyed their message in this universe.”
Both Phillips and Phoenix were not willing to abandon Arthur, and it is evident that their desire to continue his story has been satisfied.
“Phillips expressed his desire to continue collaborating with Joaquin, but this time on a comedy, as he admires his ability to be spontaneous and humorous.”
“I believe there is a strong demand for comedies at the moment. The statement in the Joker 2 trailer, ‘What the world needs now is love,’ captures this sentiment perfectly. However, I also believe that a good laugh is something we could all use.”
