Jonathan Roumie from The Chosen Reveals Major Hint on the Transfiguration

The Chosen has yet to depict one of the Bible’s pivotal moments: the Transfiguration. Fans shouldn’t anticipate its appearance in Season 5; however, Jonathan Roumie, who portrays Jesus, has hinted that it may make an appearance in future installments.

The show’s premise is articulated in its opening episode, which states that it is based on the “true stories of the Gospels.” While it honors the essence of the Scriptures, it also embraces creative freedom through “artistic imagination” to enhance the narrative.

Throughout its storytelling, The Chosen highlights significant biblical events, including the miracle of feeding the 5, 000, Jesus walking on water, and the resurrection of Lazarus. However, it’s important to note that the series sometimes takes liberties with the timeline, rearranging or omitting events. For instance, the series showcased John the Baptist’s death at the beginning of Season 4, despite it chronologically occurring earlier in the Gospels of Matthew and Mark.

As of now, the Transfiguration has not been adapted into the series, yet there are prospects for its future inclusion.

The Transfiguration, featured in the New Testament, is a significant event that underscores Christ’s divine sonship and His position within the Holy Trinity. According to Mark 9:2-13, Jesus takes three of His disciples—Peter, James, and John—up a mountain, where they witness Him being transformed: “His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them.”

Director Dallas Jenkins has previously stated that he has “no plans” to integrate the Transfiguration into the show. Nonetheless, Roumie points out that there was initial hesitation around including the scene of Jesus walking on water, which eventually became one of the show’s most acclaimed moments.

Roumie remarked on the potential for the Transfiguration to appear in one of the show’s spinoffs, given Jenkins’ openness to creative exploration.“I think Dallas has spoken openly about how we likely won’t see the Transfiguration in this series; whether it appears in one of the spinoffs remains to be seen, ” he said.

This suggestion is particularly intriguing given that Jenkins is currently working on several spinoff projects, one of which is centered on the Acts of the Apostles. A flashback to the Transfiguration might seamlessly fit into this narrative, especially considering that the disciples were instructed by Jesus to remain silent about the event until after His resurrection.

In a recent interview, Roumie expressed his eagerness to portray the Transfiguration, stating that he’s been “vying for it since early on.” He mentioned that finding a way to emotionally integrate this profound moment into the existing narrative framework has posed some challenges.“It’s about discovering a narrative twist that fits, ” he explained.

“Dallas has a unique talent for ensuring that the impact of the miracle complements rather than overshadows the overarching story.”
