Despite the abundance of shonen and shoujo genres in the world, it is rare to find a quality josei. Fortunately, fans can rejoice as Tomoko Yamashita’s Ikoku Nikki (Diary of a Strange Land) is one of the few masterpieces that will be receiving an anime adaptation.
Yamashita started serializing the manga in Feel Young magazine, published by Shodensha, in June 2017 and concluded in June 2023. The series was later released in eleven tankōbon volumes, which were shipped in August 2023. Ikoku Nikki has received numerous award nominations and prizes.
Following the announcement of the anime adaptation on the official Twitter account of the anime team, Pony Canyon also released a teaser trailer for the upcoming season. The trailer can be viewed here:

In addition to the newly released trailer preview, the new series also unveiled its key visual. The text in the upper left corner of the visual states, “[She] rests in the corner of the throne of a queen from a different nation.”
More on the New Ikoku Nikki Adaptation
On May 3, 2024, Pony Canyon revealed their plans to adapt Tomoko Yamashita’s manga, Ikoku Nikki (Diary of a Strange Land), into an anime. Along with this announcement, they also unveiled the main staff, teaser visual, and teaser trailer for the upcoming series.
Miyuki Ooshiro, the director behind popular anime series Durarara!!x2 and To Your Eternity, is at the helm of Ikoku Nikki, being produced at animation studio Shuka. Kohei Kiyasu, known for his work on Run with the Wind, is responsible for the script, while Kensuke Ushio, known for his compositions in Chainsaw Man and A Silent Voice, will handle the music. The character designs are being done by Kenji Hayama, who has previously worked on the beloved series Tiger and Bunny.
In addition to the upcoming anime adaptation, a live-action film based on the manga will also be released in Japanese theatres on June 7, 2024. This means that fans of Ikoku Nikki will have the opportunity to enjoy not one, but two new adaptations of their beloved series.
About Ikoku Nikki
The focal point of the manga is a 35-year-old novelist named Makio Kōdai and her 15-year-old niece, Asa, who share a home together. After the sudden passing of Asa’s parents, Makio impulsively decides to take her in. However, the next day, Makio realizes that she struggles with social interactions and is not used to living with others. Thus, their daily routine begins as Makio tries to adjust to having a roommate while Asa tries to adapt to living with an adult who doesn’t always act her age.
