JTBC Apologizes For Misinformation on BTS Suga’s DUI Incident — But ARMYs Aren’t Satisfied

Despite JTBC’s apology for the misinformation surrounding Suga’s DUI incident, many ARMYs online remained unsatisfied with the statement.

On August 7, there was a surge in online discussion about Suga, as news broke that the idol had been accused of breaking the Road Traffic Act by the Seoul Yongsan Police Station. Reports from Korean media stated that Suga had been operating an electric scooter while intoxicated and had subsequently fallen near his residence.

During their patrol around the areas of Nine One and Hannam, three policemen were alerted to Suga’s fall while making a turn.

Subsequently, Korean media initiated a search for footage of the incident, and amidst the ongoing controversy, JTBC released an erroneous CCTV clip.

On August 14, DongA Ilbo released updated footage that revealed the true events surrounding Suga’s situation. The video contradicted JTBC’s account as the scooter shown in the station’s footage was not related to Suga and was actually heading in a different direction from the rapper’s home.

The dissemination of false information by JTBC sparked anger among ARMYs, resulting in the station facing criticism. In response, JTBC removed the original footage and replaced it with a corrected version. On August 16, JTBC directly addressed the misleading information regarding Suga’s DUI incident.

“Our newsroom reported about BTS member Suga’s DUI on the 7th of August. During the report’s first portion, we showed CCTV footage of an electric scooter driving the main road.”

“According to police investigations later, it was revealed that the person in the video was not Suga. We apologize for causing confusion.”

Despite JTBC’s actions, the backlash did not dissipate. On the social media platform X (Twitter), netizens remained unsatisfied with the apology. Fans also expressed their anger towards the station and argued that the apology lacked sincerity.

Also in the latest update, Son Suk Hee, president of JTBC, issued an apology for a report released in December 2019 regarding BTS and BIGHIT MUSIC (formerly Big Hit Entertainment). The original report from JTBC’s “Newsroom”stated that BTS had been contemplating taking legal action against BIGHIT over discrepancies in profit sharing.

BIGHIT issued a statement in response to the reports, demanding an apology from JTBC for disregarding ethical standards in journalism. Son Suk Hee stated, “After careful consideration, we have determined that the likelihood of a legal conflict is extremely low.”

The president acknowledged, “We humbly accept the criticism that our information was exaggerated in claiming a situation where no legal action had been taken.”
