Jujutsu Kaisen: According to this theory, Gojo’s goal was never to defeat Sukuna

The battle between Jujutsu Kaisen’s two most powerful characters ended with Gojo’s defeat, but perhaps that was the fan favorite’s goal. In any case, this is what this new theory suggests.

September 2023 was synonymous with mourning for Jujutsu Kaisen readers: the beloved Satoru Gojo died in the middle of a fight against Sukuna. The duel, which we had been teased for several years as being the most thrilling of the series, ended abruptly, fueling confusion and anger on social networks.

Because not only did the author Gege Akutami end Gojo’s life off-camera, but he also dismissed many avenues out of hand, creating incomprehension among his audience. So would Gojo have been presumptuous in announcing his victory against the king of plagues, only to finally explain to his deceased friends that he had never been a match?

The manga did not end, however, as no man’s land continued to fill with the corpses of exorcists trying to hinder their greatest enemy. The absence of the Possessor of the Sixth Eye is, however, cruelly felt, and has discouraged more than one. But a theory has just emerged on social networks, and suggests that in reality, Satoru Gojo’s objective would never have been to kill Sukuna. We will explain everything to you.

Why did Gojo fight Sukuna in Jujutsu Kaisen?

Gojo’s fight against the King of Scourges was not a simple whim on the part of Yuji’s mentor. And if Gojo knew he was too weak to win, his goal would have been to fight despite everything, to weaken Sukuna.

After all, Gojo’s Sixth Eye allowed him to see and evaluate the flow of occult energy in its smallest details, even reading innate techniques. From then on, he should have realized the difference in level between his opponent and himself. Despite this, the exorcist throws himself into battle, even to the point of gaining Sukuna’s respect.

In chapter 250 of Jujutsu Kaisen, Yuta reflects that without the fight against Gojo, Sukuna would have had the strength to annihilate the young man, Rika as well as Yuji. For his part, the incarnation of disaster believes that the exorcists have all managed to improve their defensive capabilities. Would he have trouble recognizing that he has lost power, or is he right?

Satoru Gojo has always fought to raise a new generation of exorcists in his wake, freeing themselves from the backward shackles of the oldest families. On many occasions, he will insist that some of them, like Yuta, have the potential to surpass him in power. Devoting himself to the end for the legacy left behind him, the sensei would then have fought knowing his fate, with the sole aim of opening the way for his apprentices.

In chapter 222 of Jujutsu Kaisen, readers got to see Gojo, Ino, Ichiji, and Shoko discreetly discussing a matter that was kept secret. The manga could subsequently reveal the content of the conversation, offering more light on Gojo’s thoughts and plans before the epic battle that will get the better of him.
