Despite being the main and final antagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen, the origins of Ryomen Sukuna have surprisingly not been teased or revealed. However, an important detail about the antagonist’s origins may have been missed by fans in chapter 237.
During the chapter, Sukuna initiated his battle against Kashimo following the latter’s brutal defeat of the strongest sorcerer. Prior to their confrontation, an unusual dialogue occurred between the two ancient sorcerers regarding their claims to being the strongest.
Sukuna responded to Kashimo’s question with a non-specific answer, stating that he was unsure if he was born as the strongest, but he distinctly remembers coming into the world as a cursed and unwanted child. However, he may have alluded to his cursed origins.
Please note: The following article contains potential spoilers from the Jujutsu Kaisen manga series and reflects the author’s personal opinions.
The Mysterious Origins of Ryomen Sukuna in Jujutsu Kaisen
Ryomen Sukuna, a cursed sorcerer who lived thousands of years ago, is one of the primary villains in the series. He was renowned as the most powerful sorcerer of his era and upon his demise, his body was split into 20 impervious fingers, each possessing a unique cursed ability.
Despite being a prominent character in the series, Sukuna’s past remains largely unexplored. The only known details about him are that he was a powerful sorcerer and considered the strongest of his time. Many fans theorize that he met his demise at the hands of other sorcerers who saw him as a threat.
Sukuna was roused from his thousand-year slumber inside the body of Itadori Yuji, who had consumed one of his fingers to prevent it from being taken over by a cursed spirit. However, Sukuna’s initial awakening proved to be less than ideal as he was unable to dominate Itadori’s strong will.
This resulted in him being confined within the protagonist’s body until he made a binding promise with Itadori in the Fearsome Womb arc.
The binding vow granted Itadori a second opportunity at life, but it came at a cost that he would come to regret. As the Culling Game arc unfolded in Jujutsu Kaisen, the main characters were baffled by the emergence of Tsumiki Fushigoro as a separate entity, while Sukuna began to execute his scheme of replacing the hosts.
Following the replacement of his hosts in Jujutsu Kaisen, the showdown against Yorozu was presented and Sukuna’s previous life was unveiled for the first time as he was joined by Uraume on a visit to Yorozu’s location. As a result, the highly anticipated clash between Gojo Satoru and Ryomen Sukuna, the strongest of their kind, took place.
It came as a shock to all when the King of Curses managed to cut the strongest sorcerer in half. This revelation made fans realize that Sukuna was not as powerless as he appeared in Itadori’s body. Following Gojo Satoru’s battle in chapter 236, Hajime Kashimo emerged as his next formidable opponent.
Despite Sukuna’s ultimate victory, the battle was heavily in his favor from the beginning and was marked by a peculiar exchange between the sorcerers. Upon Kashimo’s arrival on the battlefield, he questioned Sukuna about his natural strength, wondering if he was born with it or had to overcome weakness in order to become powerful.
In response, Sukuna stated that he was not aware of being born as the strongest, but he did recall being born as a cursed child that was rejected by all. Furthermore, during the battle, Sukuna also attained his true form, featuring four arms and two heads, which had been hinted at during a previous flashback in his confrontation with Yorozu.
It is possible that Sukuna’s self-proclaimed ‘cursed’ identity suggested he was a product of society or the time period in which he lived. The form he attained in his battle against Kashimo may have been his original appearance as a newborn, suggesting he was a sorcerer who came into the world as a curse upon a certain family.
Growing up with an unusual physical appearance, he may have been isolated as a child, leading to a deep disdain for cursed energy and a determination to master the intricacies of sorcery.
Despite being overlooked by the majority of the fandom, this could possibly be Gege’s way of hinting at the origins of the main antagonist in the series.
