Jujutsu Kaisen Author Explains Why He Made Gojo So Perfect

Satoru Gojo wasn’t always the handsome teacher Jujutsu Kaisen fans know him to be: author Gege Akutami made him “stunning”for good reason.

Jujutsu Kaisen is undoubtedly one of the most popular manga and anime of recent years. And among its cast, there is a character that seems to be unanimous among fans: it is Satoru Gojo, the mentor of the young heroes Yuji, Nobara and Megumi.

Relying on his role as guide, being kind when necessary, sarcastic at the most tense moments, Gojo already had something to please readers and spectators. But in addition to her explosive personality and her power pushed to the extreme, the author Gege Akutami added the icing on the cake: an unparalleled beauty, whose design is essentially based on the unusual white hair and eyes of ‘a striking color. No surprise then that the sensei appears in the top 10 crushes of Crunchyroll viewers

Still, Satoru Gojo wasn’t supposed to be this physically attractive. He even hid his face behind his blindfold for a long time, and it was the author who finally decided to give him impeccable plasticity. But why?

Why did the author of Jujutsu Kaisen make Satoru Gojo so “amazing”?

Lightning, a former translator of Jujutsu Kaisen, shared a Q&A session with the author on X/Twitter, during which someone asked for more information about Gojo.

The mangaka then responded about his character: “I made sure to draw him as handsome from a certain point in the story.”

“It’s so funny to think that Gege drew that board of Gojo looking absolutely stunning at the beginning of the story to avoid cancellation, then paid the price when he had to remain attractive in permanence after that point, LOL.”

Indeed, as popular as it is today, the Jujutsu Kaisen manga came close to cancellation during its debut. Its publication began in 2018 in Weekly Shonen Jump, but was on the verge of being canceled after only a few months: this is unfortunately the fate of many series.

According to Mya, a renowned Jujutsu Kaisen leaker: “During its initial phase, the Jujutsu Kaisen manga was at risk of being canceled/discontinued due to poor audience reception. So Gege was ready to kill Yuji for good when he died in chapter 9 and wrap up the manga in a few more chapters before he was arrested.”

But killing the protagonist finally paid off, and the author’s strategy was reinforced by the creation of a character with a perfect physique: success finally knocked at the door.

A little too much, even, because the fan community’s interest in Satoru Gojo has often irritated the author of Jujutsu Kaisen, having fun calling him a “secondary character” whenever possible, or even snubbing him when he has the opportunity.
