Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 268: Yuji’s Victory over Sukuna and the Potential Fate of Yuta

The release of chapter 268 of Jujutsu Kaisen had raised expectations for it to wrap up the intense battle against Ryomen Sukuna, as the series was nearing its end on Monday, September 30, 2024. Titled “Finale”, the chapter was officially released over the weekend and thrillingly showcased the defeat of Ryomen Sukuna by Yuji Itadori and his comrades.

Despite this, some fans may find disappointment in the way Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 268 concludes Sukuna’s story. Unlike other characters, Sukuna’s death is not accompanied by a flashback or backstory from the Heian era. However, this is just a small aspect of the chapter as the second half delves into the aftermath of the Shinjuku Showdown and the consequences that Yuta Okkotsu must face.

The opening of Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 268 sees Ryomen Sukuna conversing with the soul of Megumi Fushiguro. Sukuna questions Megumi about his future, considering the fact that his body has been taken over, he has killed his sister, rejected those who tried to help him, and saved Yuji who caused the Shibuya Massacre. Sukuna advises Megumi to let go of his desire to live a normal life, urging him to leave everything in his hands and just relax.

Despite Megumi’s suggestion that Sukuna sounds desperate with only one remaining finger, Sukuna argues that it is not enough to connect his soul if the other 19 die. He also mentions that Resonance is not beneficial to him. Megumi then observes that even Sukuna, who never planned to live a proper life, fears death.

Despite this, in Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 268, he declares his desire to try living for someone else again as the focus shifts back to reality, where the barrier surrounding Yuji Itadori’s Domain Expansion is deteriorating. It is then revealed that Megumi’s body is no longer possessed by Sukuna, who has been reduced to a mere mass of flesh on the floor. Yuji stands over Sukuna and inquires about his decision.

Yuji proceeds to state that Sukuna is essentially a parallel to the infamous Mahito moment. He further explains that everyone is born into this world with an unconscious burden of curses, and that one’s transformation into a monster is purely a matter of luck. He then reflects on his own upbringing with his grandfather and implores Sukuna to attempt to live without causing harm to others, but rather coexisting with them. He assures Sukuna that even if no one else accepts him, he will always stand by his side.

In chapter 268 of Jujutsu Kaisen, Sukuna expresses his surprise and admiration for Yuji’s determination, addressing him by his full name. However, as he nears his end, Sukuna warns Yuji not to underestimate him and declares himself as a powerful Curse. As Yuji briefly mourns Sukuna, the story shifts to Uraume and Kinji Hakari. Uraume’s neck begins to freeze and they discuss the end of it all. Hakari asks Uraume about their next course of action.

Despite their defeat, they argue that there is nothing else they could have done. They claim that the only reason Hakari and his allies emerged victorious is because of Sukuna’s reincarnation. They also point out that Hakari and his group lack strength and only relied on luck due to being born in a later era. In response, Hakari proudly states that being fortunate is the greatest compliment he could receive, a sentiment that Uraume shares before succumbing to their own Cursed Technique.

Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 268 then fast forwards to Megumi waking up to Yuji and Megumi’s playful attempts to recreate the “I’m alive”prank that Yuji had previously pulled on them. Megumi acknowledges his mistake in ruining the prank before Nobara asks for their thoughts on her comeback. Yuji reveals that he shed tears upon witnessing her Resonance, while Megumi nonchalantly mentions that he had already expected it, having learned about it while under Sukuna’s influence.

Nobara expresses her belief that in-person interactions are more impactful, as Yuji distributes letters from Gojo to the group. He mentions that he personally spoke to Gojo and received no information for himself. Nobara’s letter contains details about her mother’s whereabouts and current activities, which she admits she had no interest in knowing.

In Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 268, Megumi bursts into laughter upon reading his letter, explaining to Yuji and Nobara that it bears a resemblance to hers. Their surprise quickly turns to shock as they realize the letter is from Gojo, apologizing for his role in the death of Megumi’s father, Toji Fushiguro. The letter is written in Gojo’s signature style, complete with a doodle of himself wearing his iconic blindfold and expressing his remorse.

Upon realizing the need to meet with Maki Zen’in and the others, the trio thanks everyone for their help. However, they explain that their meeting is primarily focused on saving Yuta Okkotsu. The group, consisting of Maki, Toge Inumaki, Panda, Kasumi Miwa, Atsuya Kusakabe, and Momo Nishimiya, sets off to Yuta’s location, with one of them (likely Maki) having previously insulted Yuta for unknown reasons.

Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 268: In Summation

Despite Sukuna meeting a rather unceremonious end in Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 268, it appears to be a deliberate decision in order to tie up loose ends in the remaining chapters. While it may not have been the desired outcome for fans, it is reassuring to see mangaka Gege Akutami giving consideration to these plotlines within the limited time left in the series. Additionally, the wrap-up will commence with the resolution of the most crucial plotline, that being Yuta’s ultimate fate.

This holds great significance as it could result in another casualty at the Shinjuku Showdown and potentially validate fan theories about the resurrection of Satoru Gojo. However, fans will have to wait for some time for a resolution as the series is taking a hiatus after chapter 268 and is scheduled to resume on Monday, September 16, 2024.
