Jujutsu Kaisen Creator Reveals Inspiration for Choso’s Appearance

Gege Akutami recently disclosed the source of inspiration for Choso’s appearance in Jujutsu Kaisen, and it was quite unexpected.

The Jujutsu Kaisen Official Guidebook contains a wealth of information from the manga’s creator, Gege Akutami, about his characters. In addition to revealing Toji’s impact on Geto, Akutami disclosed the inspiration behind Choso’s unique appearance.

It was disclosed by Gege Akutami that Choso’s character design was influenced by a fashion model he had previously encountered. Choso, who is the eldest among the nine Cursed Paintings, is also the half-brother of Yuji and the brother of Eso and Kechizu.

Although Choso is one of the Cursed Paintings, he appears to be fully human unlike the other two. In regards to Choso’s looks, Akutami noted that the appearance of any cursed object, including the Cursed Paintings, can vary depending on the vessel they inhabit.

Despite being strong and willful, some vessels are able to resist the cursed object and maintain their original appearances. This was the case with Yuji and Sukuna. However, the humans who were incarnated into the Cursed Paintings were so weak that their original appearances were almost completely erased. Therefore, the appearances of Choso and his brothers are truly their own.

The author emphasized that, similar to physical appearance, a cursed object also acquires its understanding of the world from its vessel. This was evident in Choso, who obtained his general knowledge from his vessel, and in Sukuna, who obtained his from Yuji.

According to the Jujutsu Kaisen Official Fanbook, Choso possesses a variety of powerful techniques known as Blood Manipulation: Slicing Exorcism, Convergence, Piercing Blood, Supernova, Flowing Red Scale, Flowing Red Scale: Stack, Blood Meteorite, and Blood Edge. These techniques are all manifestations of Choso’s innate cursed technique.

Choso holds his younger brothers dear to his heart, but he has a strong dislike for Noritoshi Kamo, also known as Kenjaku. As a beloved character in Jujutsu Kaisen, Choso is adored by fans for his striking appearance. In an interview with Akutami, Choso’s model-like looks were validated and solidified as canon.
