At Jump Festa 2021, Jujutsu Kaisen creator Gege Akutami revealed his preferred character from Demon Slayer, causing no surprise among fans.
Despite his reputation for being merciless to his characters, Gege Akutami is widely known and discussed among fans of Jujutsu Kaisen. Throughout his story, the protagonists constantly face adversity while the antagonists hold the advantage. The Shinjuku Showdown Arc serves as a prime example, as numerous important characters meet their demise at the hands of Sukuna.
It was no surprise to anyone when the author revealed his favorite character from Demon Slayer at Jump Festa 2021. He expressed a strong liking for Muzan Kibutsuji, the main villain in Koyoharu Gotouge’s shonen manga.
Many fans feel that it aligns well with the mangaka’s previous works. They also note multiple parallels between Muzan and Sukuna, the primary antagonist in Akutami’s manga. Similar to Muzan, Sukuna is an unstoppable force and no one can defeat him.
Both power-hungry and destructive, Muzan and Sukuna are both considered the best in their respective categories. Muzan holds the title of king among demons, while Sukuna is known as the King of Curses.
“It’s not surprising. Had he written Demon Slayer, Tanjiro would have died upon encountering Muzan and his family,”commented one user on X/Twitter, followed by another asking, “Can anyone truly claim they didn’t anticipate this?”
“As stated by a Reddit user,”a third individual commented, “It’s understandable. There are numerous individuals who support the antagonists,”with a fourth concurring on X, “It’s not shocking since Muzan and his demons have killed almost all of the characters.”
Nevertheless, Akutami’s decision has also sparked concern among some fans. They are expressing their apprehension that Sukuna may ultimately follow in the footsteps of Muzan. While the demon serves as a formidable antagonist in Demon Slayer, he is not the most well-developed character in the series.
“One fan expressed their hope that Sukuna would not adopt any traits from Muzan, stating that Sukuna is a much better character. Another fan chimed in, sharing their opinion that while Muzan possesses a compelling aura, his character lacks depth and is the type of villain that is easy to hate.”
It is debatable whether Sukuna and Muzan share the same character traits. However, Akutami’s preference clearly shows that he is most drawn to writing about villains.
