Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 showcases Nanami’s visions of his deceased friend Yu Haibara, but the show does not delve into the details of what happened to him.
In Season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen, Yu Haibara was introduced as a friend of Nanami. His death greatly impacted the bespeckled sorcerer. He made his first appearance in the Hidden Inventory Arc and passed away before the arc’s conclusion. However, he briefly returned in the Shibuya Incident Arc.
As a junior to Geto, Haibara also played an important part in causing his downfall. When Geto was struggling with his faith in the jujutsu world after Riko’s death, the loss of Haibara pushed him over the edge. This ultimately led to his descent into becoming a curse user and his brutal massacre of an entire village of non-sorcerers.
Despite Haibara being a major character death in Jujutsu Kaisen and playing a significant role in Geto’s backstory, the series fails to properly delve into the details of his demise.
The Death of Yu Haibara in Jujutsu Kaisen
During a mission, Yu Haibara lost his life while battling a grade 1 cursed spirit.
In spite of his short appearance in the story, Haibara’s death remains one of the most heartbreaking scenes in Season 2. Both the characters in the series and the audience were fond of him, making his passing even more devastating, especially due to the tragic circumstances surrounding it.
During their second year, Haibara and Nanami were tasked with exorcising a grade 2 cursed spirit. However, as they embarked on the mission, it became clear that the spirit was actually a grade 1 curse, far exceeding their abilities at the time.
Despite the duo’s continuous battle, Haibara eventually perished. This deeply affected Nanami and caused him to lose faith in the jujutsu world, eventually leading to his departure after graduation. In contrast, Geto took the loss much harder.
Despite being a vibrant young man with a sister to care for, Haibara’s life was cut short due to the negligence of those in power. Sadly, his death held no significance to them as he was not a powerful sorcerer. The only action taken after his passing was to send Gojo to remove the curse.
Following the sorrowful conclusion, Haibara reappeared in the narrative right before Nanami’s passing. In his final moments, the sorcerer witnessed the apparition of his departed comrade gesturing towards Yuji. And once again, he materialized in a heart-wrenching moment, this time during Gojo’s demise.
In the Shinjuku Showdown Arc, the strongest jujutsu sorcerer at the time of his death, got a glimpse of the afterlife where he was reunited with his deceased friends including Geto. This marks the final appearance of Haibara in the manga.
