Although the original premise of Jujutsu Kaisen was for sorcerers to search for the 20 Ryomen Sukuna fingers and have Yuji Itadori consume them in order for him to later be killed with the King of Curses residing within him, the story took a different turn. Nonetheless, the concept of the fingers remained significant as both Sukuna and Yuji had to consume all of them for the former to fully manifest.
Despite the story having already explained all the details, there are still some misconceptions among the Jujutsu Kaisen fandom about what happened to all of Sukuna’s fingers and how he consumed them, given that he is currently at full power in the manga. This is why the current status of Sukuna’s fingers, as of the 257 published chapters, is mentioned in the series.
This article includes spoilers for the series.
Explaining the Status of Sukuna’s 20 Fingers in the Jujutsu Kaisen Manga as of Chapter 257
In the initial chapter of the manga, the first Sukuna appeared when Yuji Itadori consumed it in the occult research club at his school. This marked the revival of Sukuna and the start of Yuji’s journey as his vessel, thus setting in motion the events of the entire series.
In chapter 2 of the manga, Satoru Gojo gave Yuji a second finger, which he then consumed. This showed how Yuji was growing stronger as a vessel for Sukuna. In chapter 8, while in a detention center with Nobara Kugisaki and Megumi Fushiguro, Sukuna defeated a being created from the third finger and proceeded to consume it.
In chapter 63 of the manga, Megumi emerged victorious against a different Finger Bearer and presented Yuji with the fourth finger, which Sukuna consumed from the protagonist’s hand. In chapter 111, during the Shibuya Incident arc, Mimiko and Nanako, two of Suguru Geto’s followers, fed Yuji a fifth finger while he was unconscious following his fight with Choso.
In chapter 112 of the manga, Jogo, one of the Curses allied with Kenjaku, gave Yuji ten fingers. As a result, Sukuna possessed Yuji’s body and a fierce battle ensued. This marked the turning point where the significance of the fingers diminished and the Culling Games became the central focus in Jujutsu Kaisen.
Continuing in chapter 136 of the manga, the Culling Games arc saw Kenjaku undoing all of the sealed cursed objects. As the series had previously disclosed, Yuji Itadori was born with one of Sukuna’s sealed fingers, which activated when the seal was lifted. This brought the total count of active cursed objects to 16 at that point in the story.
More details about the fingers
During the 222nd chapter of the manga, Sukuna consumed three additional fingers while inhabiting Megumi Fushiguro’s body, bringing the total count to 19. Uraume had provided Sukuna with these three fingers, leading many fans to believe that the former possessed the remaining four fingers. However, Jujutsu Kaisen author Gege Akutami never explicitly confirmed this speculation throughout the course of the story.
In the same chapter, Sukuna consumed a mummified version of his own head in order to replenish some of the strength he would normally gain from consuming the last finger. At that point in the manga, this head was essentially equivalent to the final Sukuna finger in terms of the power it provided to the King of Curses, even though the location of the actual cursed object remained uncertain.
During the final battle, it was revealed that Yuta Okkotsu consumed the final Sukuna finger in order to master his Cursed Technique. This was evident in the intensity of their fight. As a result, the entire Sukuna finger plot was concluded in the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, with the confirmation of the King of Curses’ familial ties to Yuji Itadori in chapter 257.
Final thoughts
The origins of the Jujutsu Kaisen series revolve around the 20 Sukuna fingers, which played a crucial role in shaping the main events of the story, particularly in its early stages. These fingers also served as a significant gauge of Sukuna’s strength as the story progressed.
