The revelation of a storyboard has confirmed that in Jujutsu Kaisen, the showdown between Sukuna and Mahoraga had an unexpected aspect that added to the excitement of the fight.
The Sukuna vs Mahoraga fight is highly acclaimed as one of the top battles in the Jujutsu Kaisen anime series. The fast-paced choreography and impressive animation, courtesy of some of the industry’s finest artists, create an incredible battle scene.
The addition of the Blu-ray version only enhanced the fight, featuring a more refined version of the battle with added extended scenes. Furthermore, the fight is lengthier than the manga, incorporating various captivating perspectives and a new element where Sukuna corrupts the Divine General Mahoraga.
Weilin Zhang, an animator, recently shared a one-minute video that provided fans with a behind-the-scenes look at the fight, with a focus on the non-canon aspects.

The video showcases various notes and instructions that comprise the entire battle. It also exposes Sukuna’s cunning tactic of deceiving Mahoraga by making him believe that he will use a particular attack, only to surprise him with something completely unexpected. Throughout the fight, the King of Curses effortlessly outplays the most formidable Shikigami ever seen in the Ten Shadows Technique.
Eventually, Mahoraga became accustomed to Sukuna’s deceptive moves and cleverly lured him into dodging behind him. Seizing the opportunity, Mahoraga throws a punch from behind Sukuna. The storyboard indicates inspiration from Super Smash Brothers, where a character intentionally performs an attack in the opposite direction of their opponent, anticipating their attempt to roll behind them.
Despite facing production challenges during Season 2’s tight schedule, the animators managed to come up with some exceptional ideas that elevated the fight scenes beyond the original manga.
