Jujutsu Kaisen: Sukuna’s Potential Return as an Evolved Curse and the Role of the Real Kamutoke

In Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 268, released on September 2, 2024, fans witnessed the anticipated end of Ryomen Sukuna. Nevertheless, the King of Curses left readers in suspense with his declaration of a future return. Like other cursed spirits, Sukuna’s potential revival raises questions about the circumstances surrounding his comeback.

During the Culling Game arc, Gege Akutami introduced Sukuna’s iconic weapons from the Heian Era—Kamutoke and Hiten. He only utilized a replica of one of these weapons, suggesting that the originals might still exist, sealed, or hidden away, potentially serving as the catalyst for Sukuna’s rebirth as an evolved cursed spirit.

Chapter 268 depicted Sukuna in despair as he attempted to exploit Fushiguro Megumi’s guilt, seeking to remain embedded within him. However, Megumi resisted Sukuna’s manipulations, desiring to live selflessly this time.

Ultimately, Sukuna was forcibly separated from Megumi, reduced to a feeble form. Itadori approached him one last time, allowing him a chance for redemption before his demise. Yet, Sukuna faded away, emphasizing that no one should underestimate him as a curse.

Within the Jujutsu Kaisen universe, curses manifest from human fears. A prime example is the special-grade cursed spirit Mahito, born from humanity’s fears of each other. Despite being absorbed by Kenjaku during the Shibuya arc, Mahito is expected to return stronger than ever.

Similarly, questions arise about what fear may contribute to Sukuna’s resurrection. Fans speculate that the last finger from which Nobara used her Resonance could be pivotal; however, challenges surrounding its recovery complicate the scenario.

The last finger of the King of Curses may be secured by Jujutsu Tech, likely enclosed within a high-level seal to obstruct Sukuna’s revival. Thus, the most feasible avenue for Ryomen Sukuna’s return involves his cursed weapons, Kamutoke and Hiten, utilized during the Heian Era.

Kamutoke appeared in Jujutsu Kaisen, as a replica was created by Yorozu through her Binding Vow with Sukuna, while Hiten has yet to be introduced. Given that Sukuna wielded both during the Heian Era, their potential usage could facilitate his emergence as an evolved cursed spirit, having rectified earlier weaknesses.

Sukuna’s return as an ‘evolved’ cursed spirit echoes Mahoraga’s transformation into the Garuda form during the Shibuya arc of Jujutsu Kaisen, suggesting that just like Mahoraga, Sukuna may also return in a new and formidable iteration.
